hey, ive been putting a pretty good deal of time and money into my 90' gt, my plans are to have a full maximum motorsports suspension package, with a 408, id like to pull mid to low 11's in the 1/4, pull atleast 1.03 g's on the skidpad, and be fully streetable on 91 octane gas, anyhow, ive got a while to go before the project is complete, im just trying to get my plans straight so i can decide priorities, right now im thinking of wheels and tires... i was thinking of the 4 lug cobra r 17 x 9, whats the most offset you can have with the fox body, without spacers or fenderwell modification, i was also looking at the 17x9 fr500 wheels or bullit wheels, on wheelreplicas.com they have both these styles in +24 mm offset, will that work? as far as brakes ill probably do the baer brakes rear disc conversion and some big brakes in front after i have the wheels and tires... as far as tires id like to run some grippy yet some what economical tires, good for road racing, and id like to run 275 in back and 255 in front (is this doable without much fender modification with a lowered mustang? lowered about an inch and a half? thanks corral.

With 275's and lowered suspension, you'll want a 30mm offset in the back. That's almost dead even with the fenders in the back on a nice 275 tire.

In the front with a 17x8 and a 245/255, run a 20mm offset. That makes the front/rear near identical and allows for plenty of room for a front coilover setup, if you're so inclined.

If you are throwing money at the car why not switch over to 5-lug ? There is alot more wheel choices. And under heavy duty cornering Iwould think 5-lug will be a tad safer than 4-lug.

If you want to do it right the first time, switch to five lug wheels by doing the following.

Baer track kit = 13 inch pbr's up front, 12 inch pbr's rear

Ford Motorsport R 58 Cobra R wheels / 17 / 9

Bridgestone RE 750's / 255/40/17 all around

This set up will allow you to rotate your tires at the track to get longer life out of them.

This setup is the most logical and simple way to do it right the first time.

Period.

yea, i was plannying on that baer kit actually... with that kit do you need the sn95 spindles? or is everything that is needed in the package? does someone have a link to a site that sells the package? so a 30 mm offset in back? are you sure thats what i would want? then 20 in front? alright im gonna look into it...

what kind of wheels should i consider? i dont really know much about it... i want them to look good and perform best, going with 255's all around sounds good for cycling the tires... but would i still have the same offset all around? with the same tire size?

Give Baer a call, they can supply you with the kit that includes everything, from spindles to axles. I would use the 96+ spindles.

By using this kit with the R58 Cobra R wheel, you are using the same wheels front and rear. 255/40/17 is as big as you want to go without doing a bunch of fender mods.

The R58 wheel is 21 lbs. It must not be too bad of a wheel if most of the AI and AIX guys are running them.

They are inexpensive, strong, and proven.

Any more questions?

wow, thats a nice idea, thanks, i guess thats the plan then... what kind of tires should i run for street/track use? nitto's? kumohs? bfg's? thanks

I currently run the Bridgestone RE 730's for a street tire or open track rain tire and Kumho Victoracers for the track. Both tire sizes I use are 255/40/17.

If you are just starting out I would highly suggest using the RE 750's for street and track as they won't hide your errors as much as an R compound will. Their limits will be lower and will usually speak to you when you are pushing them to their limit.

It is much easier to learn how to drive fast on a street tire, and safer by the way. With the R compounds, you don't get much audible warning and they will allow you to carry much more speed through the turns which might not be such a good thing when you a just getting started.

I am sure either Griggs or MM will provide you with similiar information. Pick one vendor and let them provide you with everything. You know they have tried it all and know what works best. No reason for you to go through the trial/error stuff when it has already been done for you.

My setup is basically exactly as evo1 described. With the Baer rear kit, you can use the standard offset R58 wheel at all 4 corners. I have been running 255/40/17 Khumos at the track.(not a good street tire, by the way). I am thinking of going to 275/40 Nitto 555RII for my next set, as they actually measure out fairly close to the 255 Khumos, and from what I read they last a bit longer while offering similar grip.

I don't drive my car much on the street, probably less than 1000 miles per year for the past 3 years, but I can tell you that if I did I would DEFINITELY have a separate set of wheels and tires. Road-race oriented tires are not something you want to be driving around on every day.

will the 255's fit in front? even with a lower then stock car? what do u need to do? just off set wheels? for the 255's in front i want a 20mm off set correct? what about the back 255's? what offset for those?

#15 ·
well i understand that the r58's are what i want, i have never even seen these wheels... links anyone? i didnt realize there was only one offsetting for those wheels

very nice, thanks all, i think ill go with that combo

#18 ·

Those wheels that are pictured are the "new" Cobra R wheels. They have a larger center section to allow them to be drilled for 4 or 5 lug. Original R58 wheels have a smaller center section and the bolt holes are more in the spokes (and more asthetically pleasing IMHO) and ONLY come in 5 lug. Just clearing things up a little.

EDIT: Here's a pic of some original chrome Cobra R's on my friend's '91 GT (no comments about the c/d rotors ;) )
