Unless there is a gaping hole in that screen, its can enter the pump that way. The only other way is throwing it down the mouth of the oil filter adapter, which is ridiculous unless it came FROM the oil filter.
Large pieces can get "around" the screen. I had a piece of a broken valve spring wedge the oil pump gears and discovered that there is a gap where the screen meets the "hat".
I took a hammer and tapped the hat flush with the screen to close up the gap.
