I have found an entire motor from a 99 mountainer. I imagine it should be identical to what a 99 explorer would have. I can buy it for 150.00 but i wanted to know for sure what heads and intake are on it before i buy it????

It has the Explorer/Mountaineer intake with NO provisions for egr, and the GT40P heads. To confirm the heads, look for "GTP" cast into the head near the headbolts on the exhaust side, and for 4 parallel bars cast into the ends of the heads. If there are 3 bars and they say "GT" then they are GT40 heads and therefore off of a 96 or early 97 sport ute.
Definitely worth a nice improvement. With a bit of work on the heads, lower intake and a very well tuned combo, tmoss makes 280 rwhp/330 rwtorque with P heads, Explorer intake, stock cam, 65mm throttle body, proper exhaust.
However, if you have to pass emissions -- the intake isn't set up for egr, and the heads don't have provisions for air injection. Also, for most it takes a P-specific header to clear the unique plug angle.
i got it from work. the motor was replaced in the vehicle because it had some slight piston slap in the morning when it was very cold. so i paid the core charge and took the old motor. what all headers will work with these heads i would like to stick with shorty headers since i already have an h pipe.
Well i got the motor apart and the heads to the machine shop to be checked and cleaned up. I ordered a new set of springs for them. Im planning on running those heads and intake with an e cam and probably the motorsport headers. Will this be enough to make much of a difference over the stock setup? The car is used as my daily driver so im not looking for a bunch of power just a noticable improvement over stock. will this be enough to get the job done?
are there any other factory vehicles out there with the 5.0 in it that would be worth getting the heads off of that are close to the gt40's without having to go with different headers?
For a daily driver -- sell the E cam (for some reason people will buy it) and stick with the stock cam for your daily driver. While the E might help a bit above 4000 rpm, the stock cam is gonna make MUCH more torque down low and on the street you spend the vast majority of your time below 3000 rpm. If you're insisting on changing the cam -- take a look at CompCam's XE258 or 264-266. Much more flexibility than the E cam. You're gonna have to find a new home for your ACT sensor. It currently screws into your #5 intake runner -- and there's no place for it in the Explorer lower. I simply extended the wires, and placed it in the elbow in front of the throttle body.
i have been checking on cams and ive narrowed it down to an e cam, xe264, and xe270. im thinking im going to get the 270 it seems to match what i want to do the best. it may see some occasional drag racing but other than that just daily driving. the only headers i can find that specifically say they fit p heads are the ford racing ones... will any aftermarket shorty header fit or are some designed especially for the p heads.
Take Michael's advice on the stock cam. I bought a dead motor from a Mountaineer. It had the EGR intake and P heads. I bought Ford shorty headers and ran a stock cam (I used the TB from the Mountaineer). The car ran a best of 12.66 at 108 and made 280 rwhp on a Mustang dyno. It got 23 mpg on the highway and passed emissions by a large margin. What more do you want?
PS Get the Ford Racing headers. They are superior to aftermarket shorties.
There are some shortys designed specifically for the P heads but sometimes people dont have a problem with other ones. You are best off to just get the P specific ones.
