Torque converter removal, install.

I am in the process on dropping my AOD to put in my EDGE converter, and have a few questions. Can I drop the transmission without the converter, ie leave the torque converter on the flexplate? Also for install do I put the converter on the shaft of the trans then install to the flexplate? Or do I install the converter to the flexplate then install the trans?

Unbolt the convertor from the flexplate and remove it with the trans, leave the flexplate bolted to the engine. The convertor needs to be mounted/installed to the trans before you reinstall it, make sure that you properly spline and seat the convertor to the trans, not doing so can or may cause damage to the transmission pump.

The first time it feels like it dropped in and seated, it didn't. Keep turning on it and working it in, it will fall in even further with clunk.

I am pretty sure I got my torque converter seated, it did the first initial clunk and then I turned it and pushed it and it clunked a few more times and then one more. I am going to sit there for ever and do it some more just in case. But i was wondering, it if wasn't seated all the way how would you mount up the transmission? wouldn't it prevent the transmission from mounting up with the block?

well i was trippin, because my converter went in super easy. took about 5 seconds. So i measured it and from the flange of the converter to the bellhousing was just over an inch. From what I have read that seems to be the number I am looking for.

I also sat there for a little bit and spun it and hit it a little bit just to make sure that it wont go in any further. It made several clicks on install so I am just being paranoid.

Another way to verify the convertor is seated properly is when you actually bolt the transmission to the engine. After you install the trans and tighten down all the bellhousing bolts, your convertor should be able to turn/spin easily by hand BEFORE bolting it to the flex plate, if you can't turn/spin it by hand and feel a lot of resistance, than the convertor was not seated properly. There should be, iirc, no more than 7/16" gap between the convertor bolt surface to the flexplate, before bolting the 2 together, you would actually need to bring the convertor forward towards the front of the engine to bolt them up.
