T45 work with a 351W?

I have a friend that is going to drop a 351 into my old 84 GT and can get a T45 real cheap. I was under the impression that it wouldn't work because of a longer input shaft on the T45. Am I correct on this one?

It won't even bolt up.

Moving to the correct forum.

Please keep the engine tech forum limited to ENGINE related topics. Thanks.

That's what I was telling him, but he had another guy tell him that it would work if he got the right bellhousing and that the T45 is stronger than a T5. He's eventually going to go with a stronger tranny, but he just wants one that will at least get the car going so he can drive it around and play with it a little at the track.

1. The front of the T-45 case is the bell housing.

2. There's a fellow in Texas who modifies T-45s to fit 5.0s, 351Ws, 351Cs, etc. It's a fairly difficult and expensive job. So unless the T-45 is in excellent condition and very inexpensive, you'll probably be better off to bypass it.

3. BUT, if you do want to pursue using the T-45, let me know and I'll try to find his web site or literature for you.

Thanks for the info, but I think I'm going to try to talk him into rebuilding the T5 I gave him with the car with a G Force kit. What do you guys think about that idea?

Much better idea than the T45.

Using the T45 on a 351 would be like getting your big brother to fight Mike Tyson instead of you taking him on yourself. He may last a little longer, but in the end, you'll both fail.

Take it to the track!

The thing here, though, is you know its going to fail. We know its going to fail. Its just a matter of time.

Even a Tremec 3550 probably won't hold up to a 393. Sure, it IS stronger, but its torque ratings probably aren't high enough for the 393. It will fail as well. Its just a question of when.

If you threw a TKO behind the 393, it would probably survive indefinitely. If you threw a T56 behind the 393, it would probably survive indefinitely. Its all a matter of what is designed to hold what amount of torque. If you're above its torque specs, you may be able to survive for a while, but it will fail and possibly leave you stranded.

Yes that is true but there are T5's out there with people running 10's on them and they are surviving but then there are stock cars blowing their T5's... i believe its due to adjusting and fluids. If its well maintained it will hold up, maybe not forever but a lot longer. As for the 3550... i was going to go with that because of less parts to swap. But i dont want to spend 1200 on one that is going to break after awhile. I want to be able to rely on it. Ill have to look into it more. Im trying to get over 550rwtq. For some reason that is my goal.

I understand your desire for an easy swap. For any N/A 302, Tremec 3550 would be the perfect solution. But you're running a stroked 351, that's a LOT of power.

Do a search, I know that the torque specs for all Mustang trannies has been explained before.
