Stroking a 351W - let me hear you experiences

For several reasons I will have the opportunity to begin my next project soon.

I will have to work with a starting point that is a fresh machined 351W block.

The goal of this engine is: To be used in a 1967-68 Mustang that has to look fairly original/stock (because of inspection requirements). Therefore must be carbed ....

I want a strong engine - target is around 375 - 400 hp to the wheels - that will suit a regular driven summer car.
Won´t see much track time and will normally not be reved past 5500 rpm.

We have 95 octane pump gas here.

As I have put too much of my free cash into my other cars, I´m on a fairly strict budget. On the other hand, I won´t accept to build an engine that won´t last and perform as expected.

First I must start out with the shortblock, which will be built in the USA. Later on, I will get the parts to finish the engine in Denmark.

So let´s concentrate on my options speaking in term of the shortblock.

* 377 / 393 / 408 ????

* cast or forged parts or maybe some of both ???

* any particular brands to stay away from ???

* any oil ring issues with these kits ???

* other info ???

Any opinions are much appreciated as I´m not very familiar with these kits.

Thank you
Anders

I just orderd my Eagle 393 kit from Brian at adperformance, he goes by Eagle on here. You wont need a forged crank for what your gonna run, but i would recommend forged pistons. I never heard of oil ring issues with these kits. You could easily reach 400 hp to the wheels with the 393 or 408. go to adperformance.com and talk to Brain he is very knowledgable and has good prices on kits.

I"m running an Eagle stroker kit, (418 cubes). Been flogging the hell out of it for 3+ years, (maybe more, I forget).
IN either case, absolutely no second thoughts about doing it again, (if I had to).
Granted, it's not a street car/engine, but still it gets the hell beat out of it EVERY chance I get.

Get a good set of heads to 'make it work'.

Thanks for the replies.

Considering keeping cost low / compared to how much hp you get out. How big difference do you guys normally see between a 393 and the bigger strokers ... will the difference really be that noticeable ?

Bigger is always better. More cubes = more tq/hp.
More cubes, (if put together with right combo), means spin engine less speed for more tq.

Just put 'er together with good heads/good parts, it'll pull like a mutha, and last forever.

Good luck. ;)
