Our brakes suck!

Sorry but I have to vent! Our stock brakes totally suck!!! :livid: I don't want to spend a ton of money on brakes as this is no longer a project car, it has been reduced to daily drive status (for the time being, anyway).

To be fair, I have 20" wheels/tires that definitely don't help, but still!

So to cope, I purchased stock replacement DBA slotted rotors and Hawk HPS Street brake pads... still no good! I did the correct break-in procedure and gave it 500 miles of a very normal driving. But still the brakes feel bad. Horrible initial bite, over heat too quickly, and the stopping distance is still unbelievably long.

Do I really have to spend over 2 grand to get better braking? Would braided lines help, and if so, by how much?

Sorry for the rant, but I am pissed!

Yeah, They are terribly unsatisfying. That was the first thing I noticed after picker her up. Mine pulse a bit more than any car I've ever driven. Could be the rotors, but I'm going the replacement route sometime next year.

Yes, they suck horribly, Ford dropped the ball in the brakes department IMHO. I took my 05 on track at Sebring last spring and the brakes were toast within a few laps. The rears wore down metal to metal (my fault, I forgot to turn off TC for a few laps) and the front overheated so badly the pad material melted and smeared across the faces until they would hardly work at all.

FWIW Stillen Performance offers an AP Racing 4 piston 14" front brake kit that includes new rear rotors with Hawk pads for about $1900. It appears to be a very good deal.

Whoops, I just checked and the price for that kit is now $2600. Damn, I should have jumped last week while it was still on special.

I can sell you the Ford M-2300-S kit for less than what I'm allowed to advertise. This is essentially the same kit that's on our FR500C race car and they work GREAT! I personally beat the hell out of them at Mid-Ohio on several different occasions and didn't have the least bit of fade!

Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I think you guys may be a bit spoiled if you think these brakes suck. My '08 GT has better braking feel than any vehicle I've ever had:
  • '98 Chevy Z71 extended cab
  • '91 Mitsubishi Eclipse
  • '95 Saturn S1
  • '03 Pontiac Vibe
  • '06 Hyundai Tuscon
  • and a whole long list of beaters that really shouldn't even be considered for comparison

I've been really impressed with them. Then again, my brakes are reeeaally new (300 miles or so?). Or are you guys talking strictly track use?

Larger wheels hurt braking performance.

A good set of stock replacement rotors (slotted, crossdrilled, or just vented) and a carbon metallic pad (will help fade after constant use) will make a dramatic increase.

But from my experience, a set of stainless steel lines both front and rear along with Dot 5 brake fluid, instead of the standard Dot 4 will make a huge difference in fade and consistant petal feel.

Swap your lines and upgrade your brake fluid making absolutely no air is in the lines and I think you should feel an improvement. If fading is still an issue, change to a more race oriented pad.

They are not the worst I have used, that honor goes to an old skylark. However, these brakes could be better imo. I hate having to come to a sudden stop in this car, I began adding another car length between the car in front of me now just so I feel more comfortable with my stopping room.

My 95 SVT Cobra had good brakes. If you use a 1 to 10 rating system I would rate my Cobra a 7, the 05 GT a 4 at best using the Cobra as a reference in stock vs. stock. My track car has Cobra brakes and Hawk HP+ pads with 2000R Brembo calipers up front and cooling ducts. I would rate it an 8 or 9 in comparison to the Cobra. The stock 05-08 brakes will not stop the car from speed more than once with any authority. After the first hard high speed stop they fade...badly.

Speaking of which, where is a good place to get braided brakeline kits?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of upgrading my brakes to the GT500. Yes it is cheaper if you buy the parts seperately. I have 18 inch Bullitts and got a set of spacers. My question is should I get the GT500 rear pads or go with the Hawk ceramic pads ?

I would use or match what ever the pads are in the front....if they are the stock gt 500 pads I would get the rear to match.....If youe using Hawk fronts I would get the Hawk rears, just because your matching the meterial in both front and rear, plus I know the gt 500 pads dont squeal front and rear !!..

>:p Yeah, I guess Ford made your brakes special just for you!

I already have good stock replacement rotors and pads, but like I said, they didn't help! I was told they would, just like you are saying the lines and fluid will help, but I doubt it. I will buy lines and fluids just to give it a shot, but I think it will be more money wasted.

Yes but you are comparing apples to oranges. A truck should not compare to a GT in brake performance; and you can't ask too much from Hyundais and Saturns!

You can get them from Tire Rack:

I bought the Brembo kit with 4 piston calipers
off Ebay 2 weeks ago and they are not going to work with my new rims>:p
i bought them for 1300.00 plus shipping and list is 2200.00 these come with braided lines. PM if interested, I am looking for a reasonable offer.

Unfortunatly I am to new to post pictures, but they are red Brembo calipers.

I've been to 6 track days at Texas World Speedway and my stock brakes/pads work fine. I ran into some brake fade but simply started braking earlier.

I can't imagine why you would need better brakes on the street. Maybe the Hawk pads aren't getting up to temp? And I'm not sure what slotted or drilled disks get you, but I'm staying out of that particular discussion. :)

You've had 6 track days and you still think the stock brakes are good? I haven't to wonder how you are driving the car. Even in spirited street driving our brakes give up easily.

Hell I hit 114 in 1/4 and feel like I have to use the second turn off. I can't stand the way the car pulses when you get into it. Either the brake rotors are complete ass and were not designed to slow people rapidly from triple digits, or I got a bunk setup. I just expected a bit more.

That is exactly how my brakes felt too. Before I went to Sebring I flushed my system and replaced the fluid with high temp DOT 5.1 fluid, inspected the stock pads (nearly full thickness). Within one 20 minute track session they would not stop the car. They pulsated badly due to pad material melting and smearing across the rotors. The brakes also never felt firm like the ones on my 95 Cobra or my 95 GT with Cobra brakes. Frankly I was a bit surprised that an all new design car would fall so short in the braking department.

I have since refaced all the rotors and replaced the rear pads with some store brand metallic pads, the fronts with Hawk HPS, installed braided SS lines at all four corners and re-flushed and refilled with clean DOT 5.1 fluid. I haven't driven it on track since but they do feel much better in daily driving. Still not as firm as my Cobra brakes, but much better then they were stock. Once I have the coin I am upgrading to 18x9.5" wheels and installing the big brake kit. I just don't feel secure with the stock brakes. As heavy as the S197 is and with the power they have stock they really need better brakes.

I might be an odd man out here, but you guys are spoiled!:) The brakes on my stock 07 are just slightly smaller than the wheels on my last car. So by comparison, I think the new brakes are great!

That being said, I've only had the car a year... I'm sure with a little more time, that I'll be just a spoiled as the rest of you... I can't wait;)
