This is not life or death, but I am hoping you might be able to help me with a mystery Mustang.

Back in 1980, my (much lol) older brother got a 1980 (we’re 90% sure) Mustang coupe for graduation. It had a cool paint job for the time, with a white body, and iirc two shades of blue stripes running around it and on the hood — but one of those shades was not a dark blue.

We were talking about it the other day, and we both tried googling for a picture of it, but neither of us could find one. I even looked at Ford’s paint choices for the Mustang for that year, and there’s a choice for two shades of blue (3f/3j; light medium blue/bright blue), but from looking at the paint samples, this is not the color pairing of my brother’s car! His had a more turquoisey blue stripe, if I remember right.

My brother and I remember seeing a few of these around at the time, and his was on the lot when my dad got it for him, so it definitely wasn’t some special order deal. Oh, and I did look at ‘79 and ‘81, but they didn’t have this paint combo either.

So, can someone solve this mystery?? Where is this car? Why does it seem to have vanished from the internet? Why doesn’t Ford list it as a color choice? Does anyone have a picture of it?

Thanks, kind forum people!

Do you have a picture of it?

The early brochures i have 79-84 do have some wild paint jobs on some of the cars listed in there. I'll see if i can get a few pics. Start contrast from the more subdue paint and interior trims of the late 80s

In the 1980 brochure, they mention a new “Tu-Tone Treatment”. I don’t see it in ‘79 and ‘81 so perhaps it was one year only.

this is the only picture of it in the brochure. Hard to see in the pic, but it looks like a dark blue hood and turquoise accent stripe.

This is the car I had. My folks bought it for me in 1980, when I graduated from high school.

Now that I know what search terms to use, I’ve found a bunch. Search “1980 Mustang Tu-tone”

Talking about the 1980 Mustang I owned one of those with the white & blue paint scheme and the fancy stripping. Mine was a Hatchback with Louvers on the hatch window. It was a four-speed manual shift. I got so many compliments on the car. There was a Mustang club in and around where I lived and met another person who owned the same car. When we saw each other, we would wave and toot the horn. It was a fun car and I held onto it for about five years. At the age of 23 it was a car that I never thought I would purchase but it was enjoyable. Strange thing is that I wish I kept it; perhaps it would have been considered an antique car and I could bring it to the Mustang Club and show it off.

While your Mustang wouldn't technically be considered an antique yet (those are typically 45 years or older), it is undoubtedly a classic car. And who knows, it might become an antique in the future, giving you that chance to bring it to the Mustang Club and show it off again!
