MA Inspection - Exhaust too loud = Fail!

I failed inspection this morning because I "have an aftermarket exhaust that is at least 1db louder than stock", as said by the guy.

I talked to a few people and they said that's not right, I was just wondering what anyone else knows about this?

If I just ran into a jerk, can anyone refer me to someone who will pass me? That was the only reason I failed, of course.

I can't really help you, but I would like to know what you have for an exhaust. I also live in MA, and can't stand the inspections and crap that we have to do every year.

This is the funny part:

Mac 2.5" catback

That's all!

Everything else is stock and still have all the stock cats..

Now you're getting me worried about my Magnaflow cat-back....Anyone else have trouble passing inspection in MA with aftermarket exhausts? Here is a link to the Law that says you shouldn't put on an exhaust.

MGL for Exhausts

I hope you just got a jerk for an inspector.

That IS right as required by law, but it sounds like you got yourself an ******* for an inspector. Go somewhere else....

I called up another shop and asked the inspector there what he thought. He said the law states the exhaust cannot be louder than it was stock and he'd have to fail me too.
What the hell is with these clowns around here!!

MA emmissions do blow...good thing I have until September to save a few bucks just in case they fail me. We'll see. Anyone else have thoughts on this.

Mansonozz, I say just take it somewhere new and don't say anything and see what happens. Good luck

I'm assuming the emissions were fine? If so and your willing to drive to Norwood I know someone who will pass you.
The guy wouldn't GIVE me an emissions test b/c he says I would've failed anyway due to the exhaust. (bs flag!)

My car is immaculate, nothing at all is wrong with it, I'll pass emissions no problem. Still got the stock H pipe and headers and all, no problems.

With that said...where in Norwood? :D

There is a new law that says you can't alter your exhaust to make it louder. My friend got a written warning from a statey because of his exhaust on his truck. I don't think he had any problems getting his car inspected though. This state is getting gayer by the day.

wait a minute...."get rid of your car because of emmisions"...i have an offroad h-pipe, bypassed smog pump, fowmasters, and 3 inch tips. I wouldnt pass if god was helping me....but that doesnt mean i dont have a nice shiny new sticker on my window with my VIN and the paper that say I passed. Come on guys...find a hook up....go to the local custom exhaust shop and start hinting around that you cant get a sticker...you'll see what happens. I live right outside of boston and i know at least three places i can geta sticker at and i dont even need to pull my car into the bay. This is ridiculous!!!!

Why target car enthusiats!!

I'll never figure out why the state targets car enthusiasts when they make some of these laws. Most of us have very clean good running cars. Maybe the state should spend more time on the guy with the (insert brand name here :)) pickup truck that is leaking oil all over the streets and would just barely pass emissions. What about the people with the bum stickers or stickers from another vehicle. This pisses me off. What kind of morons are making these laws anyway. What about harleys are they all illegal? They have just about the loudest exhaust I've ever heard.

That's basically my argument, but they say whatever vehicle you have, you can't alter the sound to make it louder. So if you have a little-engined car that sounds like a whisper, it's just as legal as a stock Harley that sounds like a jet plane. Don't get me started on the importance of a front license plate, either, ESPECIALLY when older registered cars (w/the green plates) don't require it! WTF? If it's such a big deal, which it's NOT, all cars should need both plates. This state has some pretty gay laws..

I agree 100%, and why should even harleys have to worry about how load there exhaust is, they should be able to moddify their rides just like us. How about going after public transpotation, like busses and diesal rail roads, and big bussiness that is spewing shiet into the air. Instead this state goes after the little guys because of all the piggy backs and campaining money that our representatives get. F-That.

By the way i just passed emisions so i will now not have to worry for another two years after installing my E-Cam.

Joe, i put a dent into my door today, and scraped the side of the paint job, yes on the mustang. I'm ripp****. I'll tell you about it at work. I have to call sean to find out who those guys are that take dents out of doors without having to repaint. The scratches are in the clear coat, except for one.

Any update???/

Hey mansonozz, any update on the inspection situation? Have you gotten it reinspected yet? Just curious.

#22 ·
Well, nothing is new yet.
I've been waiting to find someone who will definately pass me, I don't want to out and fail all over again, ya know?

I'm supposed to hear from one guy but so far I haven't.

I have a little over a month to do something; hopefully I'll run into someone who'll help

usually the best place to get your car inspected is little private owned garages...they dont get business much and usually will let stuff slide. I love the "its our policy" line....screw that! Hell, I got my stang inspected when i had only 1 h-pipe bolt on the right header...leaking exhaust out like crazy. Passes NY yearly. The only thing that they watch are tires and lightsm but I have that wrapped up for the time being....

Well the guy that inspects my car is a dirt track racer, that lived down the road from me at my old house :)

LOL...take a trip around through the country and find a garage out in the middle of nowhere. They are easy to spot cause they have the late 80's trans-camaro parked out front and burnouts coming out of the driveway ;)

Can someone e-mail me a name of a place to have mine ispected.
I finally got my truck back, and I am a little concerned bout my exhaust system. I now have long tube headers, 2 high flow cats(replacing the 4 stock cats) and louder magnaflow mufflers.

here is my e-mail dhco@rcn.com

here is a pic to wet your appitite.

Thanks

Emissions

Just finished rebuilding my '94 from the ground up. Really wanted to go with a 351, but I wouldn't have been able to pass emissions. You can't have your registration changed to reflect a 351 (even if it is a clean running, emissions friendly one) when you have a 302. Can't go from a V8 to a different V-8 because computer is looking at parameters for the stock engine. However, and this is what pisses me off - you can switch out a V6 and move up to a 351! You have your registration altered to reflect the V8 you put in so that you have a chance of passing. Go figure! WTF is the difference! I had to build around the smaller 302 block just because of the stupid-ass laws in this state!

O.K. - I'm done venting now.:joy: :joy:
