89 Vert... I need to remove the rear trim that the cover clips into.

I dont want to break them, but cant figure out how to remove it. Anyone had it off before and can give me a tip on how to get them off clean?

TIA.

Well Trim Removal, What a joy. LOL

DITTO, what he said.
Been there many times. Can get frustrating. 9mm is correct. Small socket and wrench will be needed.
Pics won't help on this one. You'll need to feel your way around. The fasteners are usually embedded in a hard puddy to prevent leakage and damage to the bottom edge of the vinyl. Just feel for the studs/nuts, and yes "sometimes" they will break from the well trim.
Your trunk hinge "cover" will need to be removed as well in the same manner. It needs to come off first I believe for the trim to come off.
Be careful because that well trim is around $130 per side to replace. Time and patience will be needed.

Good Luck,

I am doing this same project now... I fixed broken studs by first cleaning the area wih lacquer thinner, then applying JB Weld to the molding and the stud. I was able to figure the exaxct spot for re-attachment by carefully fitting the parts together ahead of time. After the stud was set properly, I added extra JB Weld around the base of the stud to give it a good chance of survival when re-installing. Just don't over tighten on the re-install, and make sure ahead of time that the nuts and stud threads are clean & smooth. Don't use JB Quick... use the regular... it sets better & stronger.

I repaired two like this so far... and they have held. However nothing is 100% on this repair. We're kind of "walking on eggs" with this one. I think the key is building up a substantial fortress around the base of the stud without impacting the mounting relationship. I was seriously considering buying new ones, but I need to eat.

The original install has puty covering the stud, and then a small piece of protective fabric tape to stop the studs from damaging the convertible material. That's what I pulled off of mine during the removal process.

If the nut/stud threads are "sticky" or if the nut is overtightened, the epoxy will break off instantly.
It takes a surgeons touch to get away with this fix.

JB weld is a great product and suggestion. Use his advice and use the slow kit.

Will it hold up under a load? Who knows, but it's definitely worth a shot. I have glued them back in the past and they held up for a long time but some did turn loose after awhile.

If you decide to replace them. Fox Mustang Restoration, Latemodel Restoration, and Mustangs Unlimited all carry these.
Around $140 each. OUCH!!!!!
Keep an eye on Ebay. I recently got lucky and picked up a used pair for $80. All the studs were good, just needed repainting.

Good Luck
