Ive got some in my engine bay that has discolored/lightened up.Ive also got some that has kept its color.I know it sounds like Im being awfully picky but does anyone know who has the good stuff? Its just annoying to have to redo it.btw, its blue.

i took all that crap off and just wrapped the harnesses nice and tight in electrical tape. much neater looking and cuts down on the overall size of the harness.

Did the tape unravel w/ the heat or lose color?

*Tech Flex* Expandable Sleeving*

************^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^***********
Hello Stok/
Just a Suggestion[If it can work].I've used this expandable sleeving on some of my underhood Wiring.
Next Round,I'm using as much as possible[Black, but they have various colors,I believe blue also].
I'm hoping I can disconnect the waterproof pack conn. and slide the sleeving over them.Once I cut the sleeving w/a Hot Knife[which are usually pretty cheap to cut the TechFlex] than I'll use Black & Red Heastshrink to dress up the ends of the Sleeving.I think it may come in heat resistance.
It can look real nice when done. It's alot of Time & Patience,if you want to go that route/:).
The Split Loom I know comes in a Flame Retardant. It's usually striped w/a Gray Tracer. That can look great too,and give you protection also.
Just a suggestion.Good Luck whatever you do.
Regards/

Nice stuff.my only question is how would I get it over connectors?I am assuming it cant be slit so how would it go on? Thanks again.

#12 ·
some of the stuff is already split to go over the wires, the other kind of gets bigger as you push it together, kind of like one of those Chinese finger trap things

Electrical tape might be fine for small things but with entire harnesses, no thanks. Been there, done that. As said before, it is a pain to undo. The cheap stuff (even 3M) tends to leave a sticky residue on all of the wires after removal. Expanding sleeves would be my suggestion.

It will actually expand big enough to go over the conn?Pretty cool.
So where is the best place to buy this stuff?I plan on getting some soon.Ill prob need the 3:1 heat shrink also.Anyone ever use that stuff?

Depending on which one you go with the Techflex stuff expands and shrinks by quite a bit. The min/max specs should be on the website, if not, order a catalog and browse through it. The 3:1 heat shrink works well. It will give you a bit more latitude than the 2:1 stuff and you don't have to order as many sizes. I've ordered directly from Techflex and the service and selection has been great. Especially if you don't want to by spools of the stuff.

Ford does NOT use regular black electrical tape for ANYTHING. I have never seen it on any Ford I've ever worked on, unless somebody jury-rigged something! They also do not cover entire harnesses in the tape that they do use, like you have indicated in the manner that you have.

The tape Ford uses is very resilient, and is more of a cloth-based tape than stretchable plastic. It does not stretch, does not wear out, and stays PUT. You have to use a knife to get this stuff apart, even your TEETH won't break it.

In recent years, I have seen Ford move away from this old style tape, and towards specialized zip-ties to secure wiring loom. It is cheaper, less labor intensive, and easier to make wiring repairs.

The PROPER way to use loom and tape together is to use loom on all harnesses, and 4-5" sections of tape to hold that loom onto the wiring at intermittent intervals along the harness.

Also, as an aside, I do indeed do what I want on my personal vehicles, but that is not an option on customer vehicles. If you don't do things RIGHT, you get COMEBACKS. I hate comebacks, and try to do the job right, so I don't have to work for FREE when someone comes back.

The tape they use is friction tape.I used it when I redid the wiring on my car.its nice stuff.I agree w/ you Murphy about the comebacks. Not only does it piss customers off ,if you work flat rate like I do (Audi) the second time you get to do the job the right way but this time for free.Im not saying doing it the way cobraguy does is wrong.Mayby his way I would have 0 prob but I like the look of the tubing.Id also think after time the elec tape would start to unravel.

i'm well aware of this cloth based tape u speak of, i work at at a mercedes dealer and they use the same tape and the bottom line is, its tape and it covers the loom put over the wiring, i'm sorry if i confused u by calling it electrical tape. and i speak from experience when i tell u that all the wiring on my car that i hid and re-taped was completely wrapped with this cloth based tape. and your right, it is resilient, its a pain in the ass to get off and if your not wearing gloves when working with it it will leave a black tar all over your hands that is a nightmare to get off. but i can almost guarantee that if i had to make a repair to my injector harness i would have an easier time unwrapping what i did than unwrapping the tape that ford uses.
