I got a 5 speed transmission in my fox and the previous owner said it was a Tremec t-5. I pulled the motor and trans cause it needed to be done and I seen it had a “Borg Warner” stamp/plaque on the trans. I’m assuming he lied about it being a Tremec? Are Borg Warner good transmissions for a street car?

They are basically the same T-5 but Tremec bought Borg Warner back in the day. They are all a world class T-5 in the foxbody 1985-93 although 1993 cobra had an actual Tremec Z spec T-5. I wouldn't blame the previous owner/seller or say he was lying.
The 93 Cobra didn't have a Z spec T5. They had the same gearing as a regular T5 but had a tapered caged pocket bearing between the input shaft and main shaft. I've got one in my 86 coupe right now that I pulled from a wrecked 93 Cobra in 1994.

Tremec bought B-W around 1997. So every T-5 made before then had Borg-Warner on it, and every T-5 made after that date (Sn95 and S197 up to 2010 along with aftermarkets) will say Tremec. Internal construction is mostly the same, other than some minor differences (excluding the Z-spec) like synchro materials and reverse function and tailhousing design.

Z-spec was build under the B-W and Tremec name. You'll need to post the info on the tag for more clarification.

Could be worse. Previous owner could have said it was a 5-spd Tremec...

And then come to find out it's a Tremec 140VS 5-spd.
