I am planning to build up my 4R70W trans with fall and need some info on the uniquenesses of the 4R75W vs a 4R70W from a 5.4L truck. I know the 5.4L 4R70W had better parts as listed in Jerry's article on TCCOA, but wondered if there are other parts in the new 4R75W that came out in 2004 for the 300HP 5.4L in the F150.

Would it be a better starting point to use a 4R75W than to use a 5.4L 4R70W?

This is going in my 4500lb AWD Ranger with a 351W boosted at 12-13psi Kenne Bell. Should be 500+ rwft-lbs. With the power and weight, this thing has to be strong!

Also, planning 10.5" PI converter.

I don't know much about the newer 4R75W, but if it's from
a 5.4 truck, it'll have at least the stronger gears in the gearset
etc as you mention from the Jerry article.

Just FYI here's somewhat of a condensation of that article,
plus some other stuff I've learned while researching my own
4R70W build for an AOD replacement behind a warmed up
351 lightning in a 4,000 lb Mark7.

It's still a work in progress as I haven't finished
the project.

the 5.4 4r70w IS a 4r75w, from at least 01, possibly earlier.

they are pretty much t he same, the 75 has a stronger planatary, and the wave spring in the forward (?) drum is alot stiffer......other than these, im unaware of any other changes.

the 4r75 does not, has not, and will never have a windsor bolt pattern tho...........so keep this in mind.

I will be upgrading a 1999 windsor pattern 4R70W with the parts I scavenge from either the 5.4L 70 or a 75. Just want to know what else -if anything- is unique to the 75 from the 5.4L 75.

I may be out to lunch on this but I think the newer trucks (I would assume these to be the 4R75W transmissions) have five speed transmissions. The older (4R70W) transmissions are four speed. I know my old Mk VIII (vintage 1995) had a 4R70W four speed transmission. Also, my 2002 F-150 with the 5.4 engine is a four speed. Caveat: My F-150 is a 4x4, so it may be an entirely different transmission.

your f150 4x4, if it is a 5.4, has a 4r75w.
for a few years, you could get a 4r100, if i am not mistaken, behind the 5.4, and an f150.

the only 5 speeds (well, they are actually 6 speed autos) in the new trucks are torqueshift trannies. (5r110w).... which in 03 was available only with the 6.0 litre powerstroke. in 05 they made them for the 5.4, and the 6.8v10 as well, but ONLY in the superduty.
they are awesome btw.....but, a bit too heavy for a car, and the dimensions are pretty big for a car as well. unless were talking a lincoln mark 3 or 4....

The F150s have the 4 speed auto. I believe it is the Superduty that has the new 5R110W 5-Speed trans. Here is the break down:

4R75W

4 = forward speeds
R = rear wheel drive
75 = 10% of torque capacity (75 = 750lb-ft. This is after 2x mult of converter, so ~375 flywheel torque)
W = wide ratio

Just bought a 4R75W today for $350! It was assembled in February of this year, out of a 2005 F150 4x2. We will see what I find when I crack it open. I will basically be doing a case swap to use with a 351W and upgrading per Jerry's TCCOA article.

stiffer wave plate and stronger planetary gears (what nosmatt said). Also the vb cal. will be different because it's for a truck (and from what I've read, this vb is not desirable for a car).

FWIW: I was about to search for boneyards to pull the 5.4 planet to upgrade in my 2001 4R70W. I got the id tag info on a 2001 5.4 tranny I found. Went to ford and ran the numbers = the part # for the 5.4's planet was the same as the one in my tranny. I think he said (not sure on the year) that in 2000, they all came with the stronger planet.
