Hi:
I am brand new to mustang's (meaning I do not know much about them). I noticed people putting X pipes and H pipes on their v8 stang's...what is the difference between the two designs? Does one yeild more hp than the other?

Thanks

well basically the shape of the pipe is different ofcourse, one lookin like an h and the other lookin like an x. soundwise the h will give u a deeper muscle car tone, while the x will give u a raspier sound, kinda like a nascar....power wise i think the x will give u a lil more power...(someone correct me if im wrong)...also most would argee that chambered mufflers will sound better with an h, while straight through mufflers sound better with an x.... hope this helps ya, and enjoy your mustang!!

From what I've read the H pipe keeps more torque in the lower RPMs and the X pipes make the torque up the RPM range a little but don't know if there is a noticeable seat-of-the-pants difference, since I have no first hand experience as of now. Supposedly anything over around 3000 RPMs up thru the H pipe and it looses its effectiveness to balance the exhaust. I say play some sound clips and just go with what sounds good to ya!!

Guys, I also noticed that there are catless (o/r) vs. catted x and h pipes. Is the gain in performance with the catless versions negligble, or does it make a big difference? Also, is there much hp to be gained with an x or h pipe overall? If so, what is the avg gain on a naturally aspirated 2v 4.6?

Thanks

Well usually a catted version has high-flow cats which have little difference in the flow unless you're like pushing a million horsepower. Also cats dampened the tone by alot and gives it a more crisp sound. (thats just my opinion though).

The difference between X and H are very little, I'm sure it doesn't really matter unless you're making some serious power. Overall I think H's sound a heck of alot better :)

typically the x or h is chosen in conjunction with the muffler choice

i have read that straight-through mufflers are best mated to x-pipes and chambered mufflers (ala flowmasters) are better suited to h pipes.

as far as the sound, x pipe sounds raspy and the h pipe sounds more dense

i have an o/r x with long tube headers and slp loudmouth catback. sounds pretty mean, very loud like a nascar.

i have heard a car with an o/r H and magnapacks and that sounded badass too, it had a deeper rumble where mine sounds more like open headers or something.

magnaflow

I'm putting on a Magnaflow exhaust 15671 on my 2004 GT tonight. I'm still debating on whether to go with x-pipe or h-pipe.

What i found was weird was that bbk (correct me if i'm wrong) doesn't make an h pipe for 99-04 mustangs. on all the aftermarket websites, and on their own website i couldn't find an h-pipe.

i've had 3 fox bodies and i put h-pipes on 2 and x-pipe on 1. all 3 with flowmaster american thunder. I never really heard or felt any difference. with more modified engines and higher hp is where the noticibily begins i guess.

check out mustangexhaust.com for previews of all kinds of exhaust setups.

I have the 15671 on my 2003 GT and it's an awesome setup with the stock H-pipe IMHO.
I picked up a solid 2 mpg over the stock system.

The thing I like is it is quiet and rumbling about town but if you want to make it roar, just step on the gas and hold on.
So its like the best of both worlds.

My only complaint is it drones at 2000RPM, especially under load.
I have a vert so that makes it much worse than in a coupe.

Let us know how you like it!

Damn, I really need to go to a Mustang meet. I wonder if there are any local ones in the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario Canada? I better start checking the regional forums! Thanks a lot for your input guys.

Also, I heard that flowmasters tend to REDUCE HP from stock? Has anyone ever heard this before?

I've heard that but I'm not sure how much is urban legend.
Even if it does reduce or boost HP, the amount is so small it won't matter.
What I can tell you about Flowmaster is that everyone I have heard drones like crazy and depending upon the rest of your exhaust system, has the potential to drive you batty on long highway trips.

The mufflers on my car are a Flowmaster knock-off(or at least thats what the muffler shop said), they were like 20$ cheaper a picece than the Flow's.

I think they are called "Mellow-Tone's" or something like that....

They don't seem to be costing me any HP :)

.

On my own the hpipe made 5~7 rwtq MORE than the x pipe. The xpipe made 3rwhp MORE than the hpipe.

I prefer the sound of the hpipes.

So it really boils down to sound and price.

Here is my 98 GT with a stock headers, offroad BBK x-pipe, and straight through mufflers. And yea, the speedo is a bit off. End of movie is around 100 - 110.

I prefer the H Pipe, but I have them on a Fox body and they are 3"... so take that with a grain of salt. I have put them on my brother's Crown Victoria and they are sounds pretty nice. It makes the car sound alot better.... Almost like an uncorked Maruader. Good luck
