I am looking for a set of Aluminum heads to go on a basic 302 roller build. The closer to Augusta Ga (30809) the better. Let me know what you have. Thanks

Check out the ported edelbrock performers in a recent post. Great value.

Pending. If it falls through pay the man for some really good heads.

Scarce commodity right now. Even gettting some new ones is a challenge right now.

And you have the correct view. Too many people asking for 90% of what they were new. Unfortunately it’s the market of people buying them trying to save every penny until they realize they end up spending the same as a new set. The cycle repeats and the market stays up because people will keep trying to save no matter the long run cost. There is nothing wrong with buying used parts but it needs to be an educated purchase with the knowledge of a risk. That comes in the form of a monetary decrease in value. But most of the times that’s not how it plays out.

Are you willing to take used heads to the machine shop to have them inspected? The Promaxx heads use PAC springs and quality undercut valves. Guys are boosting the crap out of them. The fastest stock block 302 in the country runs their 210cc Shocker Series head. The castings are done overseas and the 5 angle valve jobs, blending and assembly are completed in the US. Guess were they are located?

Yyyup, adds up quick - bought used aluminum SVO heads for $475 bought new valves for $190 - valve job & planed for $210 got lucky with springs - ported them myself - now have $875 plus my labor in them - are they worth it ? Probably not but they will work for my application...

Is this a stock shortblock? Stock pistons?

Skip any head that isn’t 20 degree. Try to grab some afr heads or just go for the brodix with 55cc chambers. Will be perfect for just a basic build without outrageous expectations.

Are the pistons in or out of the hole?

You’re also trying to explain this to someone who knows what they are talking about. Look I’ll admit my probe comment was a little too vague but I know what I meant by it I shouldn’t have assumed others would. I apologize for being defensive. My whole point was gasket thickness and quench is up to him not me or you. As are a lot of things with his build. He hasn’t given enough info so all I did was make a head recommendation based on what he said. The whole piston and quench argument is stupid. We are both saying the same exact thing in two different ways. Let’s let it go and get this thread back on track.

Agreed. My main concern was he may take wording the wrong way and make a misinformed decision.
I have to ask; why a 20° head?
TFS heads offer better ptv clearance and have proven to work very well with a stock bottom end and Ed's cam. That is; if the OP's pistons play nice with the combo.

So based on all that.... Do either of you have any heads you want to sell me?.... Just Kidding, couldn't help myself.... So what I have learned through this is that people are asking a premium for used heads... very little off the new cost

You can find some used heads, but rarely will they be a great price, as you have seen. There were two sets here within the last three weeks that were great buys for a mild build like you have. One was a ported Edelbrock head that sounded ready except for possible spring change, and those flowed 258cfm(a bunch for that level of head). The other pair were TFS 170s, about $750 IIRC and sounded to be in very good shape. Deals like those pop up a few times a year, but they almost always need $200+ more for checks or new springs etc.

So figure costs to be near $1000 total if you find a good used head deal, or $1500+ for new top brand heads. It looks like bargain new head prices for lesser heads to be near $1000, give or take depending on spring needs. That's not cheap money in any way, so a stock GT40 head doesn't look bad, until you see the low flow specs(190cfm or under).

Any flow data? And info other than ported?

I like the number of boosted engines they had in that, with near or over 600hp. I need their luck with building engines that survive. I hope to find out what a bone stock Explorer 302 will take, not to the level they went to, but maybe 9psi if I manage to get it done.
