It doesn't really matter, just soak them in water overnight before you put them on and they wont leak.

Thanks guys. My dad also has told me the trick about soaking the gasket in water, although I didn't do it.

I didn't even know the 1415 was different front to back. I guess it's like me trying to help my dad lay down strips of sod, he keeps yelling at me "Green Side Up","Green Side Up"!

They do not. One side has a design with light blue/dark blue print and it is stamped "Fel-Pro" and "1415". The other side is plain.

I've gathered from others that the flatter plain side goes towards the head and the design with print goes towards the header.

 

I've never paid attention to which way the lettering faces on 4 different sets and have never had one leak. Shortys...longtubes...made no difference.

So exactly what is soaking them in water supposed to do as far as making them seal better?

 

I think it has something to do with the gasket expanding when it heats up.

 

You wouldn't think that a material designed to withstand exhaust temps would soak water. I'll have to try it next time. Sounds like a good tip. MR Gasket makes a great graphite header gasket, but the port holes don't line up for crap (at least on my AFR's). I think they are called Ultra-Seal Graphite. If they would copy the 1415 shape, it'd be a awesome gasket
