Volvo Electric power steering conversion (Full write up)

The only negative thing I’ve heard is that it may not be the best for like auto cross. Something about the rapid change in direction. However the individual who made the video that stated that said t would be perfectly fine for a daily driver/street car. Also in videos they seem super loud since there is usually no variable voltage to control pressure like the newer cars.
A number of guys who do HPDE or autocross on the FB groups have stated they have begun to move away from the volvo electric pumps. In this application the pump is operating in failsafe mode, and the main complaint is that it cannot keep up during quick steering movements.

I looked into it for a while and did buy a pump, however in the end it seemed like a novelty, or more suited for street cars. I know the Coyote swap guys are crazy over it, but if you plan on performance driving you may was to do your due diligence and maybe consider other options.
 
Not quite so simple. It's CANbus controlled, so you would need to use a microcontroller to send a signal to the unit. You could use a Arduino or such. The issue is cracking the canbus "code" which would be easy if someone who was motivated had a working Volvo that one of these pumps was used on to filter out the code a bit. You could easily wire up a VSS variable reluctor signal to the Arduino and have it output the desired signal to the pump based on input from the VSS.

The issue is deciphering and writing the code. There have been folks working on it, but unsure if they ever figured it out.

Im in the middle of coyote swapping, and im also going to use the volvo pump, fingers crossed for track abuse.

I see you are back out on the track now. Are you using the volvo pump? If so, any feedback on how it's performing under track abuse?
 
will a sn95 or new edge /v6/gt rack work?? cant find a reasonably priced cobra rack anywhere
pick up a 2004 GT rack. It’s not drastically different than the terminator rack.

I had an 03/04 cobra rack, cracked the housing where the fittings connect and couldn’t repair it. Now have a 2004 GT rack. I can’t tell a difference

Yes, using our controller kit the pump will not run in Limp Mode.
As you see on the video there are no error codes stored on the pump ECU. It basically thinks it is running on a Volvo vehicle.
I don´t know if in Limp Mode it runs at 80% or 70% of maximum capacity. We don´t test it on Limp Mode.
But using our controller kit you can adjust from minimum to maximum steering pump capacity.
As you can see on our video the minimum steering rotation speed is 1500 RPM and the maximum steering rotation speed is 3175 RPM.
If you disconnect the controller and only supply the pump power, can you see the pump RPM displayed on your diagnostic PID's? That would confirm what % of RPM Limp mode would be. I think it would be very eye-opening if it was found to be less than the 70-80% full RPM number i've seen thrown around.


But it's awesome that there is finally a controller on the market that can operate this pump. You should definitely get this info out on the Coyote swap FB groups as many use this pump in their conversions.


I'm curious to see how this pump works when it's running both power steering AND hydroboost with a controller.
 
Thanks for doing that. So it appears that failsafe mode is roughly 75% of full speed. 2375RPM out of a max 3175.
 
In about a months time we can test out one of multiple ways to see if we can compensate for that. Either a noticeable pressure drop can auto-bump up the pump speed, or we can connect to a SAS if customer has one (canbus or one of those old POT style), and bump up the pump upon any significant inputs.

Temp inputs are a mappable offset if the temp of fluid causes numbness in the steering feel.
Can you use a PWM input to take a signal from an aftermarket ECU? Would be pretty easy to build a duty cycle curve based on vehicle speed in the ECU to output a duty cycle to the controller to help manage that.

Of course it doesn't help with folks running an OEM computer like an A9x, or a FordRacing Control pack
 
Those things don't seem to be much cheaper. I'm seeing $300+ for them on ebay. Volvo units still under $200

Don’t get me wrong. I’d gladly pay more for a pump that works nicely. Buy once, cry once.

I am 50/50 on a coyote swap, and would like to go electric PS if I go that route. So in the meantime I’ll gladly sit back and see what you fine folks can creatively come up with.
 
Is there a -6AN adapter fitting for the volvo pump?
