Well I knew about the fuel and rev limiter I forgot to mention them but the timing I knew about but I dont know what I can change it to. Also what gains would I get with changing the timing and running 91 octane?

i would like to get some opinions on this too...i have an auto 03, and have heard 26rwhp with the 91 tune..sounds very far fetched

I would be surprised if it was that much. I'm not sure on the XCAL, but normally there is a set range you can adjust the timing or fuel to.

Like, timing: X° advanced or retarded.

Fuel: X% rich or lean from X RPM to Y RPM

If you opt for the Pro Racer Package then you have access to everything: dashpot, transmission (shift, lock schedules, pressures, lock-up/unlock rates), as well as timing, AFR, injector timing (for cams), speed limiters/2-step, etc. It is a little pricey but it is a good investment, imo, with regard to making all of your mods work at optimum. And, with the PRP, you don't have to go back to your tuner for a file every time you add a mod that needs some tune tweaking.

Can anyone post up a copy of the pages for the XCal2 that tell you which fuses to remove and what the start procedures are when tuning. Like the whole plug in then turn key. Basically the starting instructions. I got a used XCal2 but no manual with it so I just need these parts. Also anyone know where I can buy one of if someone could just make a copy for me that would be great thanks.

not sure you need to pull a fuse the company who programed my tuner said i didnt have to but in the xcal instructions its says: disconnect the fuel pump and electric fan fuses. hope that helps.

You don't have to pull the fuses but it is good practice. You don't want the battery quitting part-way through a flash or you will foul up the PCM and/or the XCal. SCT suggests hooking up a trickle charger to the battery but this is a little over the top, imo.

You should pull the 20 A (yellow) fuel pump fuse and the 60 A (blue) fan fuse in the high amp panel under the hood (driver side, beside the battery). The FP fuse is the one closest to the fender, the fan fuse is the first fuse in the next row (move to the right) and it is nearest the engine. Put a little dielectric grease on the fuse tabs so the fuses slide in and out easier. The 1998 Owner's Manual high current fuse panel diagram is incorrect: it shows the FP and PCM fuses swapped.

Once you have the fuses pulled, plug in the XCal to the OBD-II port. It is right beside your right knee under the dash. Take a peek in the area and you will see it. The XCal should chirp and then you just follow the on-screen instructions. You have to turn the key to "ON" (all the lights come on) but do NOT start/crank the car! Once you have flashed the new tune, turn the key off and disconnect the XCal and reinstall the fuses. Test drive and enjoy.

FWIW, I didn't get any instruction sheet with my XCal2 but you can find a lot of info on SCT's site, sctflash.com and in the forums (look under the Support tab and you will find forums, downloads, etc.).

98powerstang:

If you have the Pro Racer software, SCT supplies "spark value files" for 87, 91, and 93 octane. If you have an XCal2 that came with custom tunes, ask your tuner to supply three tunes (i.e.--87, 91, 93 octane).

The "no start after flashing" problems (and solutions) have been covered in detail at sctflash.com forums.

Can you set the rev limiter to like 4000 rpms -like a valet mode, or if you're leaving the car somewhere?

If so, can't you just plug it in and make these changes, or do you have to unplug the fuses under the hood first?

TonyG:

It is not mandatory to remove the fuses but if the battery is weak and fails during a reflash, you won't get the car started and it may corrupt the PCM. This will require a tow to your Ford dealer for a reflash (stock calibration) and PATS reset (about an hour of shop time).

So, yes, you can flash to valet mode without removing the fuses. It takes about 40 seconds to upload a tune into the PCM from the XCal2. SCT offers a 4-position chip that would make switching to valet mode much more convenient but reflashing the chip means you have to pull it off the PCM (and this is not too convenient). With a zippy car like yours, I'd set the rev limiter to 2500 rpm for valet mode!

Chris
