I haven't really looked into it but I think its a mercury type switch ot a push button type. I have a '98 GT and I followed the light wiring back a little and came accross a black box that was mounted on the trunck lid. I'm assuming that's the switch.

If it's a mercury switch, can it be repositioned slightly?

 

Can't reallly say its a mercury switch but operates on the principle of position. I haven't tried to reposition the switch, but you would think by changing the position you could change the angle required to make the connection.
I've had the car for a couple of years before I realized there was a trunk light a couple of months ago. Bulb was missing.
