I know for most of the 99-04 GT's the top end is somewhere around 145 or so but weren't there some models that came with 16" wheels and only had a top speed of around 120? Im looking at buying an 01' but I think it may be one of these. Whats involved in removing the governor on the slower models?

Magazines claim 140's for 99+ GT's, but I'd say its closer to 150mph.

With bolt ons and 3.27's in my GT, I hit 130-135 and was still moving the needle well enough to at least get past the mid-140 range. Closed course, Mexico.

With bolt ons and 4.10's although I was making the run in 5th, I believe it would outrun a similar modded GT with stock gears. It got to 130 a bit quicker, but I let off because the driveshaft felt like it was going to rip the car apart (vibrations from installing steeper gears). Closed course, Canada.

i can bury my needle at 150 in my bolt-on 04, stock gears.

open i-state, MS LOL

and from what i understand the 16" cars didnt have speed rated tires so they were governed at like 120. No idea what it takes to remove it.

and Lucas i have never heard of a Mustang cutting off at 98, my sisters V6 automatic will do well over 100.

I know, it was weird. It definitely shifted out of third gear though. It simply wouldn't go faster than 98. He could run 13.60s in the 1/4 on a 75 shot....all the way to 98mph. The consensus was the car belonged to some sort of rental agency and perhaps they had a speed limiter installed.

My 01 was set to 130 and when we did the tune for the 5.4 we just changed it to unlimited and the problem was fixed. This is my 26th mustang and my second 01 GT The other 01 also stopped at 130 and with the 373 gears that was relay only about 100. With gears you need a tune to change the calibration on the speedo.

i had my 98 auto with stock gears to 155 and it was pulling hard. i think it'd run 165+.
you wont catch me going that fast in it though.
i have a couple friends that have had their 99-04 cars above 130 no problem. I know stock 99's will do 140

just curious jim how do u like your mac subframes? Im pretty sold on maximum motorsports subframes but i have been looking around at others too like upr and steeda so just wondering how the mac compare in your opinion

I have had my stock 04 to 135 in 5th and it could have kept going, I can wind out 4th to 130 so I would think 140+ would be fair to say.

I had my 91 to 140 and that was just scary, I haven't had the opportuntiy or been brave enough to go flat out in my 04.

I have hit 130mph on a bridge here in town. I have a boltons and baby cam(262) 02 gt and it was still pulling when I backed off.

I found this excel sheet that shows drag etc. for top speed
it says 274 crank horspower = approx 150

my car is a 98 with 360crank hp and pulls in 4th to 140 shift to 5th and keeps pulling with revs to spare, just not enough runway:(

420hp supercharged Jag will hit 155 limiter with no problem

GT's that came with 16" wheels were limited to 120, but a tune/tuner can remove it.

Razorback I think your friends car had to have a limiter installed by a rental place or something. Ever run a Carfax on it?

To all you hating on Coop stating he did 155 maybe you should look a little harder before bashing someone. Now take a look at his sig. 155 isnt far fetched considering those cars put out more power with the PI swap that he has than 99+ do.

#33 ·
i saw the pi swap in his signature and still think its a bit far fetched. Im not one to never say never but not only is he saying he did 155 he is saying that he thinks he could 165 plus. I def think that even if he did 155 that that was about it or within a mile or two of being it i certainly dont think there was 165 in it by any means.

My uncles stock 373 geared 98 car pagged the dash, several times. So those saying it's not possible, please try it out. However, my 98 car will not go faster than 125, speed limited for some reason. Won't budge past it, it'll bounce on that rev but won't go faster.

#35 ·
I think 165 would def. be pushing it so in that sense i agree with you but some of the others are saying no way to 155 and saying his car is npi. Those are the ones that comment was directed to not so much you

well like i said in my previous post... my bolt-on 04 GT with stock gears will bury the needle. Quite easily actually. It wouldnt be that far fetched IMO if enough road was given to stretch it another 10 MPH

and my 98 GT auto vert with nothing but bolt-ons and 4.10's would drop the speedo very easily. Even before the PI stuff.

Damn, my car must be a dog. It'll hit 135mph and then the needle just starts to collect dust.

I mean, it'll get to 125-ish quick, but when you shift to 5th gear, that thing is DONE.

There isn't any limiters on it, so I guess all you guys that are saying the needle is "still falling like a hammer" must have factory freaks or something.

took mine out onto an empty interstate once and according to my GPS it hit 141. found out later that was with the filter for my CAI rattling around disconnected in my fender (stupid hose clamps). needless to say i seafoamed the car after that
