Well i blew my tko tonight at the track by missing a shift into 4th gear. After missing 4th i shifted to 5th and coasted the rest of way down the track. While turning off the track onto the return road it wouldnt down shift into 3rd or any other gear for that matter. Then right before the time slip booth i forced the shifter into third. When it went in it made a loud bang. Now i have 1-4 gears but 5th and reverse dont work. you can put them into gear but theres nothing there when you let the clutch out.

For those of you that drag race quite often with a tko 600 how do you like it? and what have you done to your 600 to make it shift better?

Is there anything else besides brass blocker rings and deburring the gears to makes these tko600 shift better?

Which companies offer upgrades for these transmission?

My TKO 600 is also face plated and also works great.

I also used a 3550 that was face plated for 4 years prior to the 600 I now have and it also worked great.

I have had great luck/experience with Liberty and Bob Hanlon but there are others out there.

Clutch application also plays a part in keeping a trans alive.

The car makes 540rwhp and im running a centerforce dual friction that seems to be holding up. Is it a pain in the ass to drive the car on the street once its been face plated?

I was thinking of having mmr do there 950 spec to it, but maybe faceplating is the way to go.

Thanks guys for the replies, ill look into liberty and bob hanlon

Im starting to hear that about dual frictions, although ive had pretty good luck with them and the pedal feel is great. I decided to send my tko to liberty because there customer service has been awesome so far. Its not getting faceplated but there going to be doing all of there internal mods to it. Suppose to be a 3-4 week turn around.

I am going to be running a TKO 600 MMR900 again. It locked up in 4th on me. Got it rebuilt. Car had about 8K street miles,Car was crawling at 11.50's. Just bought the trans for the BIG future mods this year.

Funny how a cheap ass DF clutch can hold but the 3K dollar trans didnt.....Now I spent it getting my "Powerhouse" of a transmission rebuilt.:livid:

I built a 91 mustang about 4 years ago, put in a brand new TKO600 and could never shift it over 5.000 rpm 2nd to 3rd.it just wouldnt go in . took it out ,brought it to a dealer I know, changed the shift lugs to the 3550 style, put it back in took it to the track ,same thing.took it out to the dealer we went to he had it for a mth, put it back in took it to the track same thing. By then I was as mad as a midget with a yo.yo.I called tremec talked to the head tec and he told me that the transmision was not made for racing , at first I thought he was joking . when I relized he wasnt I asked him why do they have them in all the racing mag. he has no answer. I called the dealer and told him what he said and if he could call them , and he told me he would rather not get involved because I purchased it from mustangs unlimited , and tremec never pays him for warranty because they dont think there products fail . my son posted about this on this site a few years ago and and it got a huge response, GOOD LUCK! I heard they changed there tune sence. about tremec and racing. I put in a built c4 auto best thing I ever did.have raced it for four yrs never touched it, also running nos. with trans brake.PS Mustangs unlimited let me return it, they are a great co. to deal with, and I still purchase from them.

I love mine, it's a stock out of the box TKO 600. I launch at 6k with the bottle on and shift at 6300 with not one problem at all so far.

I went thru 3 T-5's before I stepped up to a plated TKO. Other than the nitrous, best thing Ive done to my car, hands down!! That tranny makes me giggle everytime I take the car out. :leghump:
And there easy to drive on the street if you know how to double clutch (not like in the Fast & Ferociously annoying).

And as for strength, check out these vids I found yesterday, 565 BBC on a fogger! Im sure his tranny is tricked out, but thats still a ridiculous amount of power. After watching those, Im not too worried about the 72mm thats goin in my car now..

no synchros unless you keep the one for 5th gear. Anyone have any info on the new carbon fiber lined synchros they just brought out, they claim being able to shift as high as 8k with them?

I never met a new tko 500 or 600 series that liked to be shifted high right out of the box, but I haven't seen one in a few years so that may have changed, I tend to look for the old tko and 3550's my self.

I have brand new Hanlon modified TKO 600 that's going to be going in next Saturday. $500.00 upgrade for the carbon fiber lined synchros. Hopefully it performs without any issues. I will be shifting at 6500-6600. (Trying to rather).

Basically, they cut every other tooth off the synchro's to open the shifting window up to a point, where you will never be locked out when hitting the gate at high RPM, and hard.

I spoke to linda hanlon, She seems like good people, knowledgeable and funny too lol. the info on the phone from linda sold me and earned my business. Now i need to pull the tranny. when i complete the install ill post up the results. I also spoke to a tech at tremec ( Joel ) Who told me if any parts requiring replacement are needed, he would work with the repair shop on those parts. Ill keep u guys posted.

Just food for thought on what I'm running so others can relate...I run a an older TKO II along with a Centerforce DF...I bought both new in 2001. It used to be in my 400HP 306...I only made it to the track a few times a year maybe had around 75-100 or so passes....With my new 500 hp 331 shifting at 7,300 I had some trouble shifting into 2nd, so anyways I had Bob Hanlon Face plate my TKO and it shifts fantastic! I have about 28 passes on it so far...and by the way I'm still using the same DF clutch I bought in 2001 my car is light at 2700 w/ driver...see sig.

Im picking up my TKO 600 in a couple of days, bob was patient enough to wait. It was done in a week. Talk about service. He answered all my questions and thankfully i wrote down the answers (Lots of detail, I didnt want to have to ask again and waste his time,Hes a busy man). Ill post the results of my hanlon motorsports upgraded TKO build when its installed.

do you know what you got done.

Mine was just done up with a new fork pad on 3rd. carbon fiber syncros and blocker rings. i hope it will shift up top with 500rwhp

(hanlon's crew chief did mine in Long Island, I believe they work with each other because he had hanlon overnight a output shaft for me)

WE were considering a Astro T-5 , but maybe the TKO 600 with the carbon blocker rings is the way to go. I called Tremec earlier this year and they told me that they were in the process of designing a new TKO 600 that will come form the factory with the carbon fiber rings, but wouldn't see the market until early 2012. Anyone else heard anything from them?

Hey guys got an update, I finally installed the TKO 600 upgraded by Bob at Hanlon motorsports yesterday. I didnt get the chance to driive the car much but i can tell you it feels alot better. Ill have more of a detailed desciption after this weekend. I spend the day friday doing the install and now its family time so on sunday ill take the notch out and have a better idea of the improvements. more to come........Ray

Finally got some time to drive the notch and what a drive it was. The difference is night and day. Bangin Bob hanlon you are the man. the TKO600 shifts like butter and 3rd gear is no longer a problem. the tranny even goes into reverse better than a t-5. I took it easy for the first 50 miles and then did a 5000 rpm power shift and it went into 3rd like butter. but i wanted to know how it would shift at a higher rpm so i brought it up to 5500 and it went into gear so easy. Now i bring it up to 6200 rpm which is where i normally shift and BAM, Money. lastly i tried a 6500 rpm shift and still so smooth. Another satisfied customer here. Hanlon motorsports gets it done. Fast, friendly, Professional service at a fair price. Thank you Bob and Linda for a pleasant transaction. Ray.
