Tire size options for stock 2002 GT rims?

According to tire rack the stock size is 245/45/17. My brother just bought a 2002 GT in the mineral grey color with the stock rims. He needs tires. What size tires are people putting on these rims if it isnt stock and why? My first inclination was to put 255/50/17 on and fill the wheel wells out a little more and slightly wider. People who have been through this please chime in.

Not sure exactly what wheels you have, but i have my Dad's stock 17x8 Bullitts off his '01 Bullitt. I got 275/40 in the rear. Here's a pic. I think it looks perfect even though some people think it's too wide. I just don't see it.

Generally a 275/40 will work for the back but you may lose a little bit of cornering response because of the width of the tire on the 8" rim. A 255/50 will fill out the wheel well but might look a little tall. A 255/40 would look better I think with a 275/40 in the back.

its no difference from the oem wheel with 275/40 and my old 17x9 wheels had no issues at all but they did have smaller tires only have problems when in reverse full lock some rubbing but full lock going forward was great

go with a 245/45-7 up front and a 275/40-17 for the rear. the 275 wont mess with your speedo cause it is the same overall diameter as a 245/45-17 and will give you some more traction. i wouldnt go with a 275 on the front because of bump steer and wanting to follow the wear of the road. I had 275's on the front of my 01 with stock wheels and it was like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel. it would damn near rip the wheel out of my hand. granted part of that was because the car was lowered.
