The Fuel Pressure/Timing Game!

Hey guys, I got a question that I suppose is not simple without a wideband and some dyno time but I need to know where to start. I've seen this question asked many different ways, but really trying to get some consenus.

Ok, My combo consists of a FRP 302 block with Gt40 heads ported and a Gt40 upper and lower ported with a 70mm BBK TB and a Pro-M 77mm Cal'd for 42# injectors and a Vortech SQ running 10#'s and have a Walbro 255 in tank and a T-Rex with MSD Dizzy and MSD 6BTM.

I need to know running a stock A9L where my tune should be? My timing was at 14 and now is at 12 degrees initial and I'm pulling 1 degree on the BTM knob (probably not accurate). My Fuel Pressure was at 45# and have reduced it to 40# (vac off). The reason I want to know if I am in the right direction cause over the years I'm tired of popping head gaskets, since I just got the motor back together again!!! If you have a similar combo or know what the intial timing and FP should be, please advise! Thanks!

60psi! geez... my 42's are strong at 40psi... You had to have been way rich through out most of the rpm. I think your going to need to get a dyno/wideband i really cant give you any advice on a tune because you have to monitor the a/f ratio you've spent gobs of money on this car why not do the last step to have it right? Just to much at risk IMO

Ok, well you both have the sort of opinions I have seen that widely varies. I know I should get the wideband and get some dyno time, but as you say SLO5.0. I have spent gobs of money on this car over the years and just built a new pool and hot tub to please the ladies, so I am trying to get it in the ballpark without blowing it up again... Last time I popped the HG I think I was getting greedy at the track and dialed too much off the BTM to increase the timing. Since getting the 42#'s and Walbro pumps and stuff and ditching the FMU that I was running with 24#'s, I'm just kinda at a lost to where the FP really should be generally... Being supercharged, the factory setting at 39psi seems low when vacuum is applied it drops to only about 35psi. So is is correct to error on the side of more pressure = more fuel???

Anybody else have some advice for me on this game for what is the known average tune?

I'm no expert since I don't own a superchaged car but I believe that you should atleast put the car on a dyno. Let them hook up their wideband O2 and make one pull and look closely at the A/F curve. If it goes above 11.5 up the fuel pressure. It's not the best way to tune it by any means but atleast you can make sure your close. The best way though is to have a dyno tune done with a custom chip.

I think where you have it set now is good. Right at 16* is where you'll be at full boost. 20 is about the most you want to run without soem sort of cooling device and that verys for some engines they will not make it that high. 16 seems to be pretty safe for your set up with out any sort of tuning. Im not sure how accurate those MSD btms are. Some people just pull the spout out and lock it at 16* Although you'll lose soem power down low you will at least not over time it and pop a headgasket and/or detonate. I think 40 is a good fuel pressure to stay at to. Maybe 41 42 tops. That will make you run a little rich. Getting by for now without a tune will work. But you could possibly pick up 50whp with a good tune.
