T5 is back together, now binding up??

OK, I got my T5 back together but now it will bind up when turning it clockwise (facing the front of tranny). If you turn it the other way it is fine. I also notice that it will not bind at all if the tail housing is off or even loosened up. As soon as you torque down the tail housing bolts it will bind again. You might get a few turns out of it then it binds. I did not change one thing in it, just took it apart to replace some seals and the front bearing retainer, but this is happening with the original retainer. BTW it will do it wil the top cover on or off, I tried all combinations trying to eliminate stuff. WTF??

Well, considering the thing only ever spins in one direction that could be normal? Dunno. Tolerances in trannys are REALLY close though. Could you have messed somthing up while you were doing your fix?

I just took off the top cover and of course the tail housing. I did shift the sliders or whatever they're called around a few times. I slid the front one up and had to use a screw driver to depress those little tabs to get it back to neutral. Other than that pretty much just inspected it and shifted through all the gears while watching everything. I don't see how that would cause any harm.....but!

They do turn clockwise if facing the front of the tranny right?

When you moved the synchro sleeve with the tailshaft housing and bearing retainer off you knocked something loose inside. You could have either lost a roller from the mainshaft pilot bearing and now it's wedged between the input and mainshafts, or one of the synchronizer key springs has popped out of place and is now binding up a synchro. If you had to use a screwdriver to push in a synchro key or insert that's where I would look for the problem. You need to disassemble the transmission and repair it, no two ways about it at this point.

If you were familiar with a T-5 (which, apparently you are not) you might be able to remove the 3-4 synchro and reassemble it properly or correct the pilot bearing problem without a complete disassembly. My bet is on something in that area. In any case, you should go to the TTC website and download the service manual.

Well it appears I have solved the problem. I was checking it out this AM and was looking pretty hard at the reverse gear. There is a little tab that comes off the back of the retaining ring and it has to be in a certain place or when you torque down on the tail housing it will bind it up. At least I think that is what it was. I got it all back together and it spins fine and shifts through all the gears no prob. I slid the front slider back up just to see what was up and I got it back into neutral no problem. I was just no holding my mouth right. One thing I can say is if I didn't know anything about them before I sure as heck do now. I could probably get it apart in less that five minutes!
