Terminators. They were very cool. My issue with them was they were in a heavyMustang. So the power and power easily made didn’t always shine as low ETs.

Then even more irritating was the club guys showing up to the track, talking about all their RWHP and walking around like they owned the place. Only to run terrible times and be pissed at the guys who built a car rather than chase a dyno number. Same with the WRX Subaru club guys.
Stock 03/04 Cobra's could run 12's. It was quicker than anything Chevy had to offer at the time.
Hell my 01' Bullitt bone stock with only 500 miles on ran 13.9 @101 that is with a 4.6 2 valve N/A

500 ain't much, these days.
If you read the details, the 401M was making 515 ft.lbs. at 2500 RPM, and peaked at 618 ft.lbs. with a HP peak of 654 at 6200 rpm. These engines were running flat tappet cams. I think the engine was pretty darn spectacular, JMHO.

That's a lotta grunt down low, without a turbo, NOS, or a blower... Not too shabby for a naturally aspirated boat anchor..... JMHO 😁😁

Oh a lil tidbit I found interesting today... Weight of a 5.3 LS bare block 218 lbs. Weight of a D9TE later model 460 block, 229 lbs... Only 11 lbs difference.. Weight of a 559 BBF D0VE long block, P-51 heads, Victor intake, with a 1250 carb, 600 lbs... To be fair... 5.3 LS long block weights 450 lbs, for those of you still not on the metric scale that's a 559 CI engine compared to a 323 CI engine with the bare blocks within 11 lbs of each other...Sooooo not so much of a chunky butt eh?

I had a 03 for a few years that was close to 600 RWHP. That thing was hard to beat on the street. Loved beating up the rich boy corvettes and a few 100k euro AMGs and some Porsche’s…
What did it run at the drag strip? No doubt a killer on the street. Come to the drag strip and ET is king.

They shine when you hit them with boost. Hard to beat the LS platform when that is the goal. Hard to beat it period. Just like it was hard to beat the Cleveland.

5-600 hp duck. Build a car. Not just an engine. You’ll eventually have to get out of your lawn chair at a car show and put down your dyno sheet to actually find out if your car is quick. If not stick to video games.

There were two links. I dare you to pay for the 400 M engine in the engine masters challenge.

Yeah, it was a great build. Now pay shop hours and you could likely be waaaaaaay ahead with a solid and simple turbo build

I remember being at the track and seeing that back in the day. You are spot on. Though LACR was inthe desert at altitude. Correction factors are right there.

In stock form LS engines have lots of problems, especially when they are outfitted with cylinder deactivation software and other "features". Not uncommon at all. A 2013 Silverado in the shop now with a 5.3 and 90K miles has oil pressure issues. This is due in part with the oil "coking up" on the pistons/rings, in the oil pump and else ware. Pistons are junk in those motors. Guys in the shop say they see it all the time. I have only been there 3 months and know of several examples of this.
Now we have brand new LS engines that are wiping out the lifters and camshafts. Not uncommon to see a 2020-2021 5.3 with engine noise, mis-fire codes ect and have the cam/lifter wiped out with only 5K miles on the vehicle.
Now you know why there are so many in the junkyard.
Take that engine out of the junk yard, get rid of all the crap and you have a good engine, but as delivered, not so much.

The block was fitted with special liners with a block fill. I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole. It was an impressive build all the same. Why would you dare me to do something so blatantly ignorant? I have no interest in the extra .8" deck height offered by the M block, but then I'm not building a dyno cell warrior.

Take a Dart 9.5 block with readily available rotating internals, the CHI or Higgins heads/manifold, custom roller cam, good EFI system, now you've got something readily attainable, durable, reliable, and powerful with or without boost. Dozens of other builds would take a logical path in the current landscape of performance engine builds.

Now a question relevant to this thread might be "what does all of this have to do with a stock 5.0 liter engine block and 8k RPM?" I can't give you a solid answer to that other than it makes about as much sense as building a 400M.

This Saleen SN95 T1 Mustang used a 600 horsepower 400M with Trick Flow heads. This car kicked ass, and handled very well. It was actually for sale a few months ago on racing junk.

Do you know if they ran 4 lug rims in the 90’s on Fox’s in road race events? Or were 5 lug swaps still do-able back then?

...something thay may be missing from this thread is that 8000 RPM with a stock 5.0L block necessitates the purchase of a quality engine diaper...and a message over the PA system apologizing to the fans & fellow racers for all the broken plastic & torn sheet metal strewn over 400 feet after you hit the wall...a few times...or maybe you just get lucky...or maybe you wish you were wearing an adult diaper as well...

**** happens in racing 🤷🏼‍♂️ The crashes are 90% of the reason why road racing events are so populated anyway.
