i was just told by a friend that the rods and pistons are good for 500-550 hp. i need to know the "truth". i dont want no "well so and so sales person told me... :bs: " i need to know actual experience using the factory bottom end. no bs here, this could save me alot of money.

the car will see auto-x and limited drag time. mostly street though. weekend warrior.
thanks

also this will be with a complete aero motive fuel system and on a good tune at a reputable dyno shop. probably a pro charger p1-sc intercooled w/ upgraded 3 row intercooler.

Someone needs to tell my car it can run at 450 rwhp. With 48000 on the odometer N/A (we're talking 260RwHP/260RWTQ) the motor took a *****.

1 and 5 rod bearing went south. :blam:

It's luck of the draw, really.

At any rate, running even 8# of boost is a risky proposition. Read this post and you'll see what I mean.

It's a combination of low buck connecting rods and glass jaw ring lands.

Hope this helps,

9000 miles on the odometer, 437rwhp for about 2000 miles of that. Then a piston ring landing cracked. So now its all forged :p anyway I still have the old pistions and rods, I sell them for REAL cheap ;)

are the stock pistons and rods in a 99 hyperutectic or forged or what?

Stock = NOT forged.

They haven't had forged pistons since what, late 80's early 90's?

I want to guess and say 89... but it could have been as late as 92. I'm guessing.

Someone who knows will stop buy.

they had forged pistons till 91 i believe. They were cheap TRW forgings but they were still better then the cast ones.

the ones we have now are hyperutectic. I couldn't tell you much about the metallurgy, but like most cast pistons, a tiny bit of detonation and they are crying for their mommies.

500-550 HP (flywheel) would be right on the highside of things. if its gonna see some hard driving, forge it, you are never gonna know when you get a bad batch of gas, floor it, and nothing but detonation.

Once you start to exceed 400rwhp you're pushing it and it's only a matter of time, no matter how good your tune is. The stock internals are hyperutectic and can't stand up too much in the way of poweradders. 6psi or a 100 shot are all it can really take on a regular basis -- atleast that's all I would feel comfortable throwing at one of these pre-03 engines without worrying about destroying it. If you want to make more than 400 at the wheels, be safe and forge it ahead of time; I'm glad I did.

Mine made 459rwhp on 8# of boost. I think I lightly toasted #7. It still runs fine but I'm staying out of boost to be safe until I get my forged rebuild done. Its really best if you go ahead and get the forged motor done and then you can make upwards of 700-800hp before regular forged stuff begins to not be enough. Then you get to go with billet!

I was making 397 rw on a conservative six pounds of boost, custom tuned on a wide band with a rich air/fuel curve and still broke ring lands on two pistons after only 1,200 miles. There are no guarantees when it comes to boost, some people are just luckier than others. I wouldn't discourage anyone from going the blown route, just be prepared to spend some dough.

Good luck,
Brian
