If you dont have cats, why do you still have the pump on there and why would you think it would drop milage? With no cats, go ahead and remove it.

As for parasitic loss, I doubt there is a whole lot - the pumps dont have all that much resistance. But for the kind of guy who is into U/D's and things like that (I dont go for small gains at high RPM like that), it is worth doing.

The pump is not doing much for you now though so losing it should not matter (not that I condone removal of emissions equipment ;) ).

Good luck.

After the car warms up the smog pump is basically doing nothing anyway. It's main purpose is to take warm exhaust air back to the rear of the heads to help warm the engine. The car runs much cleaner when it is warm and the faster that it heats up, the less hydrocarbonsand other crap the car emitts. You gain basically nothing as far as power but it will take off maybe 10 pounds and at least shift you center of mass further towards the rear of the car about 1/10''. If you do take it off you'll have to plug the vacuum lines, plug the holes in the heads, and either get a replacement pulley or short belt. All of it is very simple.

The smog pump, is called a Thermactor AIR (air injection reaction) Pump.

The name “Thermactor” is Ford’s trademark brand name for the emissions control system known generically as AIR (air injection reaction).

The function of the AIR system is to blow fresh air into the exhaust gas stream. There are two main benefits of this:

1) Fresh air blown into the exhaust system, downstream of the (O2) sensors, but upstream of the catalytic converters, provides oxygen (O2) to promote further combustion of any remaining unburned hydrocarbons (HCs) in the exhaust gas.

2) Catalytic converters require additional oxygen to convert the carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons in exhaust gases into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).

So if you don't have cats, then the AIR pump isn't doing you much good.
