Side to Side play on adjustable rockers?

I'm running 1.6 3/8" stud mount adjustable Trickflow rockers. They've always been noisy as hell, and we're in the process of re-adjusting them. When we took off the valve covers to play with them though, we noticed that there is a rather large amount of side-to-side play. I know there shouldn't be any up and down play (i.e. between the rocker arm and the pushrod or valve), but is side to side play a big deal? Could this be the reason why Trickflow rockers are so noisy? Is there a brand out there that might not be so bad? Thanks..

Since you got stud mount I would go with the crane gold race rockers. My cobras have a little play back and fourth buts it's only 1/2 of a mm. but the noise is a pain in the a#$.

The pedestal mount rockers shouldn't have any side-to-side play should they? If they did wouldn't it have to be in the bearing itself, since the trunnion is bolted down solid? The slop in the pushrod groove of the guide plate would allow the stud mounted rocker to move a little wouldn't it? I assume there shouldn't be much slop with either kind. It does seem like guys complain about stud mount rockers being noisier than the pedestal mount. I guess bad geometry can make them noisy as well. Good Luck!

The side to side play is normal. I have it on mine and mine are quiet. its just the clearance between the pushrod and the guide plate. As long as u put it to zero lash and do a half turn it should be perfect. I thought too much into and and couldnt get em right. Just set em to zero lash and put a half turn on em and you should be fine. Mine are nice and quiet.

My Comp Pro-Magnums have side to side play. Brand new rockers. A couple are really noisy at idle. I tried 3 times adjusting them and still no better. I might try running a thicker oil.

Did everybody miss this post? This is correct. The rockers can move side to side because of the difference in the opening of the guide plate and the diameter of the pushrod. This is what guideplates are for, to keep the pushrod even with the roller tip.
