Question About Tremec Trans

I am wanting to buy a tremec but I don't want to spend the money that everyone is asking for the new 5 and 6 tremecs. Does anyone still sell the regular old 3550 new?

dont bother with any t-5s. they all suck compared to the tremecs. i dont think anyone has any new 3550's anymore. i shelled out the money for a 3550 when they were out. it wasnt cheap but it was the best money i have spent on my car. you can buy a used one and rebuild it if you are on a budget.

One of the T-5's strenghts is that it's a very smooth shifting transmission when in good running shape compared to the 3550 and tko series. The 3550 is just a tad bit more notchy than the t-5. The downside is t-5's are notorious for being weak.

I have a different mindset. I think it's better to upgrade the T-5 to G-force specs. That way you retain your small light 75 pound T-5 and yet can upgrade the internals to handle 600HP. WIth a steet car around 300-350HP, i think it's plenty.

The tremec 3550 and 3650 are just a tad bit more clunky to shift than a t-5. Sure they are strong, but i like easy clean shifts. That's why i prefer to stay with an upgraded t-5 based trans

no the weak link of the t-5 is the mainshaft. it flexes wearing out the tips of the gears in which it eventually breaks the gears. usually third gear goes because it is the furtherest away from any bearing and gets the most wear.

The T-5 case is not weak..Where did you guys hear that BS.
On the other hand,Tremec 3550 and TKO case is prone to cracking .!!!
The flex in the in the mainshft is an issue when you get up there. If you reshim your input to 1 -2 thousands end play you will be able to handle quite a bit more

T-5 Cases ARE WEAK, VERY WEAK.

I think not, its called EXPERIENCE

I've had over EIGHT T-5's die in my car over the past 16 years.

I've had TWO T-5 Cases Grenade on me. The last one had GForce parts, and guess what, the Clustergear went out through the case on the passenger side, destroying everything in it. (Biggest waste of money I have ever spent.)

I've since put in a Tremec, and guess what? Been rock solid, no breakages. Tremecs are just plain stronger.

Even FORD ditched the T-5 in favor of the Tremec in the 1995 Cobra R's with a 351. Ford realized they were too weak, so had to put a beefier Tremec into it.

I have a new in box one I may sell. Bought it on a GP 2-3 years ago, moved to house with no work area and have never used. Have a new bellhousing, fork and King Cobra clutch also.

I'm trying to decide where to go engine/power wise with the new car and which tranny due to the latest options available.

The Tremec had 3 different cases over it's lifetime, the final one ribbed nicely. Oh, I have a Fox T-5 (ouch) in a box also and the 5000 mile rebuilt T5 in the 95 if/when I swap it. The good T-5 is a SN95 length.
