I'm trying (again :D ) to start a Procharger D1 thread, looking for info about people's experiences with this blower. I have read bits and pieces here and there, but I wanted to start a fresh thread about it.

Now i have read all about the leaky seal issues with the P1SC and D1SC, so I'm more interested in hearing about the non-self contained D1's. I also talked to a big Procharger dealer today (they also carry Vortech and Paxton, so keep that in mind). He said that out of all the Prochargers he has sold, not one person has complained, and if he were to suggest a supercharger, it would be a Procharger. I trust his advice, so here I am wondering what everyone else has to say.

Here are a few questions:

1.) Where did you tap the oil pan for the return line? If I had my pan tapped for a Vortech S trim, would I be able to use the same hole?

2.) What rib size is the pulley? How much are replacement blower belts, and how hard are they to get locally?

3.) Do you, or have you ever had problems throwing blower belts? Was the problem easily solved?

4.) What intercooler do you have? Based on what you know, is the 3 core sheetmetal intercooler a good option for ~500rwhp?

5.) What is your overall impression of the fit/quality of the D1?

Thanks :p

I can only give second hand knowledge on this about a friend of mine who had one (now has D-2). He raced his car on a regular bases for 3 seasons with it and had no problems with leaks, throwing belts or other gremlins. He has a Bennett 337 with hydraulic roller in an 89 coupe. He was using a 4" blower pulley and a 3 core sheetmetal intercooler. He loved the blower but of course eventually wanted more power and bought a D-2. He was running 10.1 @ 139 with the D-1.

I can only speak for the D1-R but I have had very good luck with it.

1) If the pan is tapped for a vortech you should be able to use the same hole.

2)I am running a 12 rib 3.75 inch driven pully with a 8 rib belt. 8 rib belts are available locally, 10 rib are in certain lengths, but 12 rib are hard to came by. I pay about $35 for a 57 inch 8 rib belt.

3) I have not had any ploblems throwing belts but I built my own bracket.

4)I run a standard 3 core ( not sheet metal) intercooler and am over 500rwhp.

5) I have been impressed with all non self contained prochargers. The quality is very good and they are built reasonably heavy. I only have about 3000 miles on this one but I put over 30,000 miles on my P600B and never had any problems that wern't my fault.

I also have the D-1R also and am very pleased. I upgraded from a P600B and kept the 3 core cast intercooler from that setup. The seat of the pants difference on my one time to the track so far is huge. I use the Renegade pulleys which are 8 rib, so belts are very available at the local parts house. The only time I have thrown a belt was when I was first fitting it up and bought one too large and didn't get it tight enough. First time I romped on it, it jumped a groove. Since then, I have had no problems. The overall quality of the kit was very good. I think they have made a big increase in quality over the P600 kit I bought in '94. The blower was fine, but the supporting parts were definitely not world class stuff back then. The new kit had excellent finish on all parts.

Overkill,

I noticed that you mentioned a custom bracket - I have actually read that a few people have had problems with the stock Procharger brackets bending and flexing under load. Is this a problem that has been addressed? That point worries me because I'm not the type of person that could just fab something up if there was a problem.

I've logged over 10K street driven miles with my old D1, and have only 2 complaints. First are the install instructions. They were pretty much unverisal, meaning they had the P600 and the D1. The mounting brackets are totally different. Also the instructions never stated that the blower may be needed/could be clocked. That being my 1st ever install, I jacked with it for 6 hours, until I called ATI. The 2nd problen was a leaking oil feed line. I pulled it off, and put some teflon tape on it. The instructions say NEVER do this, but I made sure that none could get in the line. This fixxed the problem, but I had a nice mess to clean up. These are my only 2 compalints, and very minor IMO. If I could do it all over again, I would without a doubt. Damn thing makes killer power, and the TQ is unbelivable. I used the regular 3-Core IC and the kit came with a 4.50" pulley. She made 14lbs on a bolt-on 92GT, and 8lbs with TFS heads and Holley. A 4.0" pulley upped it to 10lbs. Low end boost is unbelieable for this size blower. SHe made 10lbs/4K with the stock motor, which is why my TQ looked so nice. Another thing is the sound. Damn thing sounds like a airplane at 1800RPMS cruising through town, and is fairly quite on the highway. With my stock motor and 2.73s in the rear, it was a LS1 killer on the HWY. I put 3 cars instantly on a C5. The look on his face was PRICELESS!:joy: :joy: :joy:

I bought one of the 1st D1s, so the instuctions probably are fixxed by now. I had to get my 12rib belt from ATI; I couldn't find anyone who made them. Not even Gates does, and they're a national co. Are you planning to run it on a stock or mildly modded motor??

I have a built 306, Brodix ST5.0 heads ported by Ed Curtis, Holley Systemax intake, custom Ed cam... should make 450+hp at the rear wheels with 8psi or so.

The reason why I'm after an intercooled blower is because my compression is close to 10:1. I made the mistake of buying a used shortblock, and the compression ended up being higher than I had anticipated.

Now, I always go back and fourth with the intercooler issue... Ed Hohenburg is going to be tuning my car for me this springs, and he says we should just use what I've got for now (S trim) and if I need a cooler down the road, get one down the road. But a friend is interested in my S trim right now, so it has me thinking again...

Pretty much as Overkill said, but no problem with the bracket. 12 rib only from ATI that I can find. The clock thing messed me up for a while too. The July 2000 5.0 Mustang has some good pix of a D-1 install, I'm sure some guys here could post some too, that you would find helpful.

Great blower. Changed from a Powedyne :barf: No contest.

I have had a D1B for years without any problems with the blower itself except for the leaky feed line which I fixed with teflon tape. The only other problem I had was 17lbs of boost on a stock Cobra motor  ...now I have a new motor! :D

I was also throwing belts because of a bent PS pulley which led me to get a Flaming River.

Where did everyone get their 8 and 12 rib setup and do they make them for the 94/95 with a/c? The clearance looks close between the a/c pulley and the s/c tubing.

My 8 rib D1-R set up is a mix of different kits. I use the ATI alternator relocation kit (from a cog kit I think) and have no smog pump. The blower bracket is a cog kit bracket since I don't have PS or AC. It moved the blower closer to the crank for a shorter belt. I reclocked the blower to discharge "beneath" the car so I could adapt the existing 3" intercooler piping. If you use any of these pieces, I would go to the pre-94 front cover and water pump. It makes fit up much easier. I kept the original pieces and had to go with a remote water pump to clear the larger crank pulley. The whole setup was designed/recommended by Michael Freedman, except I believe his used the earlier style front cover & water pump.

I've got a D-1B also. I bought the kit used and was worried about the install also when I started. The pan will be tapped on drivers side under oil filter. I've got a 12 rib setup and the only belt I can find is Procharger at 75$. I have used two 6 ribs at half the price with success though. You will probably need an aftermarket balancer as the crank pulley is huge and can cause some vibration. Don't buy into the statement that you can run stock timing without any type of retard especially if your compression is higher than stock. I ended up at 18* total timing with my iron heads that were milled .040 after I ate a couple gaskets trying to run stock timming curve. You won't have a prob getting 450 out of your setup even at 10psi.

You know what, it sounds like everyone with a Procharger is complaining about belts... so even with proper alignment, is it common for belts to give up the ghost?

No I haven't had a belt tossing problem. When I bought the kit used it came with a shorter belt than I needed so I used two 6 ribs to see if I was going to have a prob. Then I bought the 12 rib later on. I think the belt tossing prob was on the old 600b models.

My one belt mishap I mentioned above was due to my own error. My setup is not standard, and I had to size the belt myself. The first time I didn't get one small enough, but I thought I had enough tension. Since going to a slightly smaller belt I have had no problems. On my P600 I never threw a belt in 80K+ miles.

Here's another question: can you purchase a D1 with an 8 rib pulley set-up from Procharger?

From what I understand, that's an add-on, which seems a little weird.

TTT, and now a question about installation.

1.) Compared to a Vortech install, how complicated is a Procharger?

2.) I *think* I read that you can get either a vertical mount intercooler, or a horizontal mount intercooler. Which is better for a street car, and why?

3.) Does anyone run a cog on their procharger?

Thanks

Double post, sorry...

I have had a D-1 for about two years. The only complaint I have with it is an oil leak problem. I have had to send it back twice. The second time The lock tight they use on one of the set screws inside the blower did not hold. ATI was very good about it and took it back both times with no questions asked and fixed it no charge. They also took the time to explain what happened and were very helpful. I have had no belt throwing problems whatsoever. It's a little complicated to instal but you won't be disapointed. I used to have a powrdyne that made 9# and there is no comparison. The D-1 builds boost twice as fast and sound unbeliveable.:joy:

What was the turnaround time when you sent the blower in to be fixed?

The horizontal mount looks cooler and probably cools better, I have a custom alluminum scoop on mine which looks good. The only problem is you have to be careful pulling into driveways and going over speed bumps or you'll rip it off. I've done that, nothing but sparks everywhere. The vertical may be better for the street just have to decide how you want it to look in the front.
