Noisy lifters vs noisy rocker arms?

I rebuilt a 302 from my 91 5.0 which had bent valves and pushrods, broken block and crank, but doing it on a budget, I re-used what I could, my concern is the factory hyd. roller lifters and the rocker arms, not thinking about it at the time(should have just bought a crate motor looking at it now).

Now the motor has some "ticks" in the top end and I cannot tell the difference between rocker arm and lifter noise. It runs fine, just the ticking is getting to me. Is there a way of telling what piece of valvetrain is making the noise, short of replacing the valvetrain? If I pull the lifters is there a way to visually or otherwise confirm if they are indeed collapsed?

The tick is barely noticeable at an idle, but as rpm's increase the ticks get louder.(can only hear the ticks with the hood open standing beside the engine but it doesnt seem to just come from one place on the top end, it sounds like it is a few lifters or rockers).
I was informed recently it could be collapsed Lifters or damaged rockers, they are the crane/ford aluminum 1.7 ped. mount rockers, I can not see any visible damage to them, and I just retorqued them last night to make sure they didnt loosen off, 3/4 turn to 20lbs, let pressure off the lifters for 5 min before torquing,

Hey

Grab the wifes broom handle, unscrew the broom & hold one end to your ear and touch the other on your valve covers and underneath your intake while car is running. You will here a distinct tapping sound through the broom handle. You can also do this on your headers. I chased an un-primed lifter for days until I tried this. it works!

Thats where my issue is.
I listened to the motor with the broom handle and it is coming from the rockers, noisy on both valve covers and can hear it a bit through the headers but it is definately coming from under the valve covers.
I took the valve covers off again and after pulling everything off and trying a few things Ive concluded that my pushrods are a tad too short this time around and that is where my issue lies.
Now I am not sure exactly how much longer of a pushrod I need yet, or if the next longer pushrod from stock will be enough, but if I can get my hands on a pushrod checker tool Ill buy that tomorrow. (I was gonna be real ******* and try to make it work without the channel, but one shim only and its 1/2 turn roughly to 20lbs, but not guranteed that the rockers will stay alligned)
If the bottom channel that square the pedestal wasn't needed, or thinner, I wouldn't have this issue but unfortunately it looks like Ill be buying a set of pushrods as the rockers sit probably .030 higher than required, should have payed more attention when I put the thing together.
