was talking to one of the local speed shops in my area and the guy told me the upr k member kit is too brittle and i should be using a mild steel version like the qa1 that he has availible to him. is this guy just looking for a sale or does he know what hes talking about??

thanks

Yes and no

Their are alot of guys running the UPR with no problems on the street

The QA1 is the one he has so of course he is going to recomend it.

The only two that I would recomend are AJE and PA. good fit with both and the most header clearance. also both USA built by real americans. they are at the race tracks to provide support if it is needed

I have an AJE, albiet I installed it in 2003 or so. I've posted messages directly in response to a thread like this on HC50.com concerning my dis-satisfaction with "MY" AJE Kmember.

The driver side wheel is pulled further inward on "MY" AJE K-member. Others have had this issue as well. FWIW I'm running stock brand new FRPP control arms and centered them when tightning down the control arm bolts. I also made sure the K-member was square in the car before final tightening. My best friends car former NMRA R/S car also had the same issue. It seems the jig was off or the welder put ours together on a Friday. :( My post on HC50 linked directly to TM.com where another member had the same problem. Rumor or not, I heard in the early days AJE's jig was built off a fox front clip that was in the shop and came from a wrecked vehicle. Perhaps that has been corrected. This is, from somone who used to work for them that we all know. :D

AJE just responded to me to take some measurements instead of PMing me or offering to correct the problem outright, this was/is on HC50. I've considered selling it and going with one from Jason @ PA for this very reason. The only way mine would make me happy is if I converted to coilovers and ran heim joint adjustable control arms, both of which I'm not interested in doing. Besides, the problem would still be there, just covered up which would drive me crazy. I'm too damn picky... .My car has never been wrecked and I'm the 3rd owner.

BTW - I ordered directly from AJE and my K is like new, probably 25 street miles.

there are going to be people saying chromoly will crack, or "i have this friend that blah blah blah". but the fact is someone has had a problem with all brands steel or chromoly. i am cheap so upr was the one for me, they have had their problems in the past, but the k-members have been redesigned and are much better. some are stronger then others, but some you are going to pay out the ass for the name brand, i all depends on your bugget

UPR!!!

I have a UPR K member on my car and it holds up good. I unfourtionatly found out last night how good they are. Was planning on going to the track tomorrow and I wanted to do a quick datalog before I go. So I got the bright idea to hit the interstate for a WOT run. I got a stretch where there was no one in sight except for one pickup and he was 2 lanes over, so I floored it and was doing around 135 mph when I got to that pickup and he came over 2 lanes and cut me off, I had to jerk it over into the far right lane to keep from hitting him. When I did, the rear end broke loose and I went sideways across all 4 lanes, airborne into the grass median, all the way across the median and finally got it stopped facing on coming traffic in the fast lane on the opposite side of the interstate. The force from when it landed in the median blew both passenger side tires, sheared the passenger side strut and literally ripped my caster/camber plate from the car. The K member, A arms and Caster camber plates (All UPR products)are perfectly fine. Before anyone lectures me about playing on the streets, That taught me my lesson. From now on my car is track only! It's not worth taking a chance to hurt myself or someone else. Sorry for such a long post but everyone that has seen my car has been amazed that the K member and A arms held up.

Chromemoly is strong but it flexs and fatigues that is why you seen many fast full tube door car having to be sold to someone that will not abuse it as much after a few years just because of the chromemoly`s physical attributes
if you daily the car and put alot of miles on it and want to keep it in for many many years go mild steel it will last longer . But if you want the extra weight savings go for ther chromemoly . They would sell chromemoly k members so widely if they didn`t last or withstand what they need to so either way you will be fine
