See my sig. I was going to toss the 3.55's and step up in gear on my daily D. I drive mine quite a bit on the highway with 2 kids so I don't need steep gears. I have a 75 shot that I haven't had a chance to put on (DUE TO WINTER WEATHER) and wondered if the 3.73's would be a better choice. I also have thought about trying the 3.90 gears and the 26x8.5 ET DRAGS.
It sounds dumb but for my money if 3.73's are good- 3.90's might be better.
Let me know if you have experience with or have heard input about these. Trying to stay off the rev limiter if I decided to spray it with a small shot. (w/o a 28" tire) Thanks.

Thanks CLEANLX

I know you said they were a little busy on the highway, thats why I am contemplating the 3.90's. Besides no one that I have talked to here at our track have them so I might give them a shot. I am like you guys in that I want to keep my stock cam etc and see what I can do with it. Let me know on your ET progress.

What kinda speeds are you running?

With 3.73's, you'd finish at 113mph at 5000 RPM.

Probably just past your peak HP... not sure if you'll make 113 though... even with the juice.

It doesn't seem like you'd need any more gear than that (it's just not a high reving combo).

Thanks for thr info. see times.

These are my best 3 slips so far.

Best 60' so far on OLD 26x10 ET drags w/5500 launch 1.81
330 5.409 ave. 1.83/85
1/8 8.376 @83.30
1000 10.939
*13.106@104.17

*13.19@103.61 330' 5.432 8.43 1/8@82.40 1000-11.017
*13.35@103.24 330' 5.565 8.57 1/8@82.35 1000-11.165

I generally ran high 102 on average but like I said haven't had much time playing with tuning etc. I have only started with this car this year. I pulled the car seats(2-kids) lol and jack/spare but thats about it. I figured while it was cold I would have another 8.8 done with axles, Auburn pro, the 3.90's (just to be different) a cover, to see what it would do. Just for street fun basically.
I have a new 75 shot kit and could just run it like it is, but figured if I stepped up in gear I would get a little more ET both stock N/A and with the jug. Let me know what you think. Thanks

:D I guess my 104 mph was a good estimate :D
You want to go thru the traps at 200-300rpm over your shift point
Really? The shift point should be a few hundred RPM higher than peak power... and you don't loose much RPM with the last shift, so I don't think you'd wanna push it even higherl...

Even so, with stock heads and tired old springs, the torque's gotta be really dropping off at anything over 5000 RPM... no?

Here's another good calc:
http://www.corral.net/tech/gearcalc.html

at 104 mph,
3.55 = 4750 RPM (don't know what happened with my last calc)
3.73 = 5000
3.90 = 5250
4.10 = 5500

Thanks guys for the input.

I have been checking around to see what kindof $$ I am looking into getting the rear completely re-done. DAMN!!
All I can say is it better be EXACTLY what I need lol. Looking into Strange axles, EATON diff, cover etc. Nothing fancy. I like the fact that with 3.90 gears I should trap around 51-5300 or so in fourth. With the 3.55's I would guess like the graph says is about 4700 or so. I have pulled several 103 and one 104 with them so I hope with the 3.90's I can pick up a couple more.
Thanks again. Damn this cold here! I need to spend some money lol

I know the feeling. Mine's been away for a couple of months now, and I'm itch'n to buy some parts :D

I'm thinking 3.90's as well (I think I'll do 110 mph, and it should pull to 5800 RPM nicely). Too bad the 3.90's tend to cost a little more though. Have you seen any deals?

The Eaton is probably the best for strip use.

I'd like to see what mine will do, but it's not a drag car. I won't be using slicks, so I'm thinking of going with a true trac myself. I'm gonna keep the 28 spline axles as well.

They are 189-199 for the gears.

I have slowly put parts on it even though the wife is totally against it. Honey! I think the rear end might be going out? It needs re-built, OR SOMETHING. ( LOL ) Anyway I just wanted to change it a little bit, hense the different gear. If it works out well. It's a BONUS.
I have raced my buddies car the last two years so I have never wanted or needed to run mine. Right now were getting HIS ready for WFC6 in St. Louis. New chassis & engine setup, tossed the NOS and bolting on a Vortech (pullied for 15-18lbs). With the NOS setup I ran a best of 10.98@124. No idea on the new engine till we finish it and get it on the dyno. Should be damn close to 9's. My car is a family TURD. Don't want to spend a lot on it, not shedding weight, not chucking the a/c etc. I Honestly HAVEN'T spent much time in a stock car (like mine) on the track. It is definitely different waiting for the rpms to come up, and really getting riled by friends. That SUCKS! I just want to step it up a little so that I can hold my own on the streets, if need be. Like I said, I have no idea what a stock cam, small valve-headed car really needs in terms of gear etc for ET. Especially that I have 2 kids to tote around and don't want 4.30 gears and a 275 60 15 DR on it to make it streetable.
Sorry for my life story, Thanks for all the input guys REALLY appreciate it. I'll decide on it soon and just do it. Plenty of time.

O.K. I'm not new to 5.0 world, but I've been away for a while (I've been in 4.6 land). I'm coming back to 5.0 and don't know what ratio would be best for a daily driver that sees occaisional 8-hour trips (one way). I was thinking 3.55s, but after this thread, I'm thinking maybe 3.73s? Your thoughts?

i was told (by the x-husband - untrustworthy bastard) that if i was to blow her that i should not put 4.10s on is this true? and if so 3.73s or 3.90s?

I'm going with motive 3.90s this spring. With a stock engine I would stay with 3.73s though. They tend to fall on their face at 5500rpm and running out of gear sucks.

gtgirl,
If you're going with a centrif. supercharger, the 4.10s will be fine with UCAs, LCAs, and some sticky meats. With the roots type blower don't go with anything over 3.73s, because you won't be able to get any traction (regardless of what you do).

Here's another really good link:
http://chris.kellnet.com/chambers/shift_points.htm

For the 1/4 mile, you'll wanna look at what mph your running, and choose the gear accordingly.

I'm thinking about 4.10's now. They're cheaper, and I'd be at 5900 RPM at 110 mph on street tires... and it'd cruise at 70mph at 2550 RPM (which is reasonable, and above the exhaust drone).

ok i have an AOD on my 4.6 with 255/40 17Zs (kuhmos) but i am getting ready to put on 275/40 17Zs is 3.73s still the right way to go? it will be running the track once i get the tires and gears on it so i have no clue about my times when i street race it, it shifts (or i will shift it) around 5200-5500 rev limiter is at i believe 5800-6000

Wow your car is set up almost identical to my 88 GT. The only diffefence is I still have the stock intake, no head work and my car is lowered. I have been thinking of getting a cobra intake and a small nitrous system but wasn't sure how it would work with speed density. Since it seems to work good for you I'm gonna have to think a little harder about it. As for the gears, I wish I had gone with 3.73 instead of 3.55s. Iv'e had 4.10s in the past and they were fun but kind of annoying to drive everyday.

gtgirl,
I've got 315/35s and 4.10s and they're fine. The 3.73s won't be too bad. The rev limiter is set at 6250, but you'll be shifting fine at 5500ish. Most times I let the computer shift for me. In fact, the only time I shift it manually is when I don't want it to shift to second before I hit it.

gtgirl,
If you go with a roots-style blower, 3.73s are the max you should go (you'll still have traction issues). If you go with a cent. supercharger, 4.10s are fine. I'm currently looking into both options. If I go with a cent., I'll stay with my 4.10s, but I'll go with 3.55s if I go with an SVO supercharger (I drive the streets mostly).
