Horsepower Needed for 10's...and cheapest way to run 10's.

Two questions: Approximately how much horsepower would a Foxbody need to run 10s? What about newer Mustangs? I'd like to see some setups by the people here that run 10s. If you consider any other mods...like stripping the vehicle...please list.

Also, what's the cheapest approach to achieve a 10 second car? Thanks.

About 500hp for a 3000# car. The heavier the car the more power.

As for the newer stangs, not sure. They're heavy and all the parts for them cost about 3X more than the same part for a Fox body....

It takes about half that or less if done right (trading/used parts)

THis is a 10.30/40 combination. can be done with less than what i have, matter of fact gt 40 iron heads untouched will do it. With teh iron heads i went 10.7x Easy stock shocks, struts and ac box still in. just lost seats and put race buckets in it was 3000# with me in it.

lol..just noticed th OP date.....

Well look at the NMRA FS cars. Tommy Godfreys car has gone high 10's, and there are a few other Factory Stock cars running low 11's. All these cars have to weigh 2950-3050. And i bet most make anywhere from 370-400hp. Only draw back with us is that its not cheap...we cannot run power adders, no porting, and have to run a drag radial. So it gets expensive on our end..lol

Brice goes 11.3 full weight with no power mods other than a FRPP/Whipple HO Supercharger Kit and a VMP Tune. It has a Steeda (Cornering Type) Suspension so I would think a Drag Type Suspension, Fats and Skinnies and Long Tubes with Offroad Pipe would get it their.

The newer models are HEAVY just like the 02-04 Cobra's. In my opinion they are gona cost you $ to make them run like a foxbody because of the added weight. Im not sure if a newer body mustang could get into the 11's with 500HP at the factory weight. I could be wrong but just my .02

By the way, there are some turbo foxbody guys running 10's with similar combo that i have listed in my sig with the exception of them running an auto. Turbo's love auto's.

FYI/FWIW: My '05 GT is "detuned" to around 450RWHP and it's full-weight, and on pure street tires with no powershifts it's run easy 12.40's on street pump gas (93)
With just a tire and some powershifting I think it's a safe bet that there's another .4 in it. With some race gas and a tune change it'll go 11's no doubt...

1.3a) HEADERS & COLLECTORS: All entries may utilize long-tube type headers with a maximum tubing size of 1.625-inches (1-5/8) with a 3-inch maximum collector. Stepped headers are prohibited; header must use same 1.625-inch tubing from header flange through collector. Standard bolt-pattern header flanges are required, maximum thickness 3/8-inch. Adapter plates are prohibited. Merge-style collectors or megaphones are prohibited.
1.3b) EXHAUST TUBING/SIZE: Maximum exhaust pipe diameter – 2.5-inch up to gas tank, 3-inch from gas tank rearward (tailpipe).
1.3c) TAILPIPE & EXHAUST RULES: Full exhaust system required. Tailpipes must be in and exit in the factory location. Tailpipes must follow factory design, must go up over rearend housing and exit at rear valance.
1.3d) MUFFLER REQUIREMENTS: Commercially available (generally available through retail locations) mufflers required. A maximum of two (2) mufflers is allowed. A maximum of one (1) inlet and one (1) outlet is permitted. Mufflers may have a maximum of 2.5-inch inlet & outlet

Per the '09 NMRA rulebook........

10 sec dodge diesel trucks exist but what does that matter. So far I can't figure out if you already have a mustang you're asking about or if you want to get one but are not sure which one to get so what's the deal? Do you have one or not? Tell us what you have or want and the suggestions will start flowing. My sig shows how to have a 10.0X fox car for $10k in the whole car with no power adders and stock crank/block/heads.

Do you know how much power you are putting down All Cleveland?

I'm not trying to go fast cheap with my '05. I addressed a question relative to them. I've had a 10-second foxbody that I could drive anywhere... My '05's cushy, comfortable and handles like a dream. Plus it's real purdy. But that's a different topic... :salute:

I'll gladly trade you an apple for your orange. ;)

oh wow . . . what a can of worms you have there.

I would say 460 (There are plenty in my local junkyard, $140 complete). C6 with a shift kit . . .

Pick up the motor/trans for $300, throw in a shift kit and converter and have $500-600 in the drivetrain if you do the work yourself.

Someone on the internet (460ford?) did a D1 motor, ported stock heads, some hft cam and it ran low 11s. Put some gas on it and it would deep in the 10s.

With the setup I already have, the stock shortblock is the weak link. It's already dialed back.

Anyway, back to the original topic.

So whats a good stock block/ street trim setup to get into the tens is what I think hes trying to get at.

I changed my stuff this year but Im runnin a 347 11.1, Pump gas, Jr. heads/intake a 3500 converter/brake and a cam with around .560 solid lifter 3.73's this year and hope to be mid to single elevens. Then smack it with a easy shot to get it done. Not a grudge racer just a social one so not taking it too serious. Its snowing here so have no real numbers yet. Hope this helps you out.:)

Sorry, but the obvious is: Buy a roller. You can go buy a “real” car and do what it takes to set it up for racing (like many of us including myself did) or just buy one already done minus the motor. Do it yourself you will save labor costs, but if you get one already done you will save labor and lotsa the cost of parts. How many of us can get out what we put into it? 1200 for a well set up roller is not that uncommon. Try buying a car, getting frame connectors, cage, spool, gears, driveshaft loop, electronics, suspension, slicks etc, etc. for 1200.

10's are easy with a cheap turbo setup. Use a stock forged piston roller block in a fox body with $900 dollar alum Patriot heads or something similar, put on a typhoon EFI intake with 42lb injectors, a fuel pump, and slap a junkyard twin t-bird turbo setup on there or an MP T70 single turbo DIY kit and go 10's with a C4 and decent converter. It's been done hundreds if not thousands of times.

200 horsepower at the wheels will get you 10s if the car is light enough and the suspension works.
In your average 3000-3100 lbs fox with stock suspension, probably 375-400 at the wheels with an automatic and just some half a$$ed suspension.

My old GT only showed 399 rwhp on the dyno through an auto and ran 10.54@127 on motor at 2950 lbs.

Be carefull reading mag articles, they inflate the numbers to sell products. I read where MMFF put a 62mm turbo on a stock 130k mile motor with all stock parts and it made like 400+ HP, I made 414 on 93 octane with gt40 heads and intake @ same boost. I also learned first hand from a vendor (my tuner)that HAD an add in a particular mag that claimed they fudge with the numbers to help sell parts. :shakehead

Anyway back to the topic, I would think cubes and the spray or a DIY turbo would be the easiest way to reach 10's! For example you could probably get a built 10 sec car with all the extra's for around $15k, same car might cost you $25-30k to build yourself.

I got a freshened up 306 with out of the box trick flow heads, E-cam, and a carb with a 150 shot and my last run was a 6.89 in the 1/8 which is good enough for a high 10 pass. This is a 5 speed car, the car only makes 385hp but has a good supension and weight reduction, like k member, manuel rack, no a/c or heat. Still retains the interior all except for a back seat. Oh and it is a 88LX
