big valves come close to the cylinder walls when they open and sometimes eng builders will notch the top of the cyl for added flow. these gaskets leave room for that modification if neccesary

it used to be pretty common. the OEMs did it

in todays world where crevice space traps fuel and causes bad emissions it isnt anymore. but the gaskets for the dinosaurs still have to be ready for all the options ;)

post # 3 is the answer.

to say (in post #5) that all of the later types of gaskets have no open area or notch..is incorrect...

;) I never said none - but for arguments sake it is minimized. Most gaskets are for 0.030 over and 0.060 overbore engines, and of course if it is necessary by design it will be there.

In much the same way that ring packages are moving up as high on the piston as possible to leave less "crevice" area. It would be improbable to think that the rings would be at the very top of the piston though ( to leave "no open area or notch" as you say)

how far into this do we really wanna go? (friendly discussion)

Dude, do yourself a favor and, just walk away. You don't want to get into an argument with Kato:king:. He will tear off your internet balls. :pain:

I accept your answer and leave it at that :)

most all of the replacement cylinder heads for a chevy have a "spread" valve guide or larger valves themself, so the gasketwill have the relief.. also, it is more common for a 4.060" bore....
most all of the chevy replacement heads have the chamber itself in the shape as described in photo of gasket.
