Is their any noticable difference in sound between H and X pipes with or without cats on the 5 L cars? I have heard on the 4.6 cars their is a sound difference.

yes, H pipes have a deeper sound while x pipes have a more raspy, almost nascar sound. x pipes sound really good on a stock motor with LT's because the motor isn't pushing enough air for you to really hear the rasp. Once I rebuilt my motor, i was pushing 70 more hp, and you could hear the rasp when you got into it, but it screams so hard up top that the rasp is well worth it for me

go to mustangexhaust.com look for the LT/xpipe/flowmaster combo and listen to it....sounds freakin awesome

shaft7 is correct. to define the x pipe as raspy is hitting the nail on the head. the h pipe is a little louder or deeper and the x pipe more raspy in sound. i love the way my pro chambers sound though. kinda hollow with a little rasp in it, sweet.

I just got H-pipes put in my GT and I asked the shop about X-pipes. They said if you have Flowmaster, which I do. With the X-pipe when you floor it the way the flowmaster is designed you will get a rattle type noise because the X-pipe puts out more air flow and will sound kinda shi**ty. With your 5L the H-pipe will most definately put out a sweet raw muscle sound.

As was said before the H is a deeper rumbly sound and the X is a higher pitched growl that can sound more or less raspy depending on the catback.

I have video clips of mine with the H and the X swapped and nothing else changed for sake of a good comparison. I can send them over AIM or however you want. I'd host them on my site, but lately I haven't been able to access it.

To try and describe it, I have BBK longtubes on mine and went from their H to a Dr. Gas X and man it sounds just so much meaner than before. It sounds like the engine is turning 9000rpm when it's around 5k. The sound alone is worth the swap, but I'll be hitting up the dyno some time soon to see what if any difference it made. It sure seems to rev faster in neutral and keep pulling up top instead of feeling like its slowly choking. At first I didn't notice any difference driving home from getting it welded together, but that's because I was shifting around 2k. From about 2500 and up it's a whole different kind of sound between the two.

It's more of a raspy sound rather than a rattle. I was afraid it would sound terrible with my 2ch flows, but I think it sounds killer. It makes the noise from about 2700 to 3000 RPMs. From sound clips I've heard it seems to be raspier in that range with the longtubes as opposed to with shorties, but I guess in the end some like it and some don't. You really can't go wrong with either one, though. I kept my H nearby in case I didn't like the sound, but now I have no plans whatsoever to switch back to the H. I had heard people go on and on about the Dr. Gas X and now I see why. :D

any of u guys use or heard of X pipes from a company called Pypes Exhaust?
Ive got a set of the Pypes X pipe on mine now with a magnaflow Catback. Mustangtuning.com is where i got the x pipe shipped free and the lowest price anywhere.

Mandrel bent, no kinks, and the thickest flanges at all 4 ends of any ive ever used.

Ive had off road pipes on all my mustangs and this one is probably the best fitting one ive ever bought. They fit tight to the body. No leaks, heavy gauge. Bungs exactly in the stock Position, all 4. They come 2 piece, drivers side is one pipe and connects to the rest. There is also a skid plate welded @ the X, but as i said, this sits higher than any other ive used. You cannot see them at all, No sag like crappy MAC ones ive bought. Id buy it again and recommend their X pipe.

Im considering their catted X pipe for my LX, and after reading your thoughts, getting very serious about Pypes, im also considering the Mac H pipe. I also want to go with the Magnaflow cat back. Are you using a catted X pipe? what motor are u running? Are u using the ceramic or the aluminized?

Magnaflows with X-pipe anybody? Does this sound good?
Yes, I like mine very much. I'm not into loud unless I'm "gett'in on it" & the resonance at highway speeds is not bad compared to everyone else's 'stangs that I've ridden in. Suprisingly, the catted x from both bbk & Magnaflow are not much quieter than the non-catted versions; but will cost you anywhere from 10-25 horsepower with the cat's,(mine was 25 according to the dyno). Yes, I have both catted & non catted x-pipes.... You know which one is mounted on a shelf in the garage for smog test time...;)

I havent heard ,until now, of anyone losing more than 10hp by installing cats. Mac claims their cats flow 330cfm, with is more than a flowmaster muffler, so in theory, the muffler is still the biggest restriction on the exhaust system. Any idea why u mite have lost 25hp? seems like alot.

I had a Bassani x-pipe with bassani mufflers and it sounded like pennies rattling in aluminum can between 2500-3000 rpm. It was horrible. My friends would all go thhbbbbbbb! when I would get out of the car. I changed to flowmaster super 40's and the sound is much better but there is still a little bit. I have had four different mufflers and the sound has been in all of them so it is defiantly the x-pipe. Flowmasters hide it the most. Kind of makes me want to trade to an h-pipe.

I may be old fashioned but i love a 5.0 on 2 chamber flowmasters and an H pipe. One of a kind muscular sound and I have had an X pipe, it was a bit quieter.
