Going to get some AFR 165's soon & want to get a custom cam at the same time. I want to get the most out of my set up so who would be the best to have build my custom cam for my DD? Thanks for any help!!!!!!!

+1. Having only dealt with one of them, the only thing I can offer that would set one apart from the other is that I've seen others complain about it being difficult or timely to get an answer or response from FTI. CI is pretty quick to the punch on a response, even after the cam is delivered. And even when you're in the middle of an install and have a question or 2 or 9.

FTI is more familiar with dealing with AFR's.

CI is more familiar with dealing with Canfields and some other select heads, but not AFR's.

I'm quite confident CI could make a nice cam with the AFR's but Ed builds with them day in and day out.

This is like coke or pepsi, great taste or less filling, I hope this thread stays respectful. For the record, I have dealt with both, I think very highly of both, they have differences of philosophies but both seems quite capable of getting the job done. You need to contact them and go with who you feel is right for you. The car in my sig sports a FTI cam and it rocks.

Let my power speak for itself BUT Ed also gave me a cam sheet with my request and was similar,SOO I like them both!!! Jay had to work a little harder on mind because I kept calling him and switching things and requested something a little bigger than what I wanted originally to go with. His worked out perfect!!Jay knows Canfields so thats why I chose him and like they said Ed knows AFR's so IF that makes you feel more comfortable than go what makes you feel better!! Don't know if it helps any in a Custom grind though!

Jay hands down. FTI never got back to me and Jay kept in touch even from a HAND HELD TXT email. And also Jay couldn't get ahold of me one day and ended up calling 3 times that day before he finally got me. If that isn't customer service I don't know what is. You know what my car made power wise and I've told you how it drives. From now on I wont have anyone but Jay Allen make cams for me!

ive already done both with the same setup and ill tell u this one was better than the other on the dyno peak to peak but the track times say diffrently. i can honeslt say nothing changed in the combo on either and both were way diffrent cams according to the card. i installed them in the way they told me to install them and they both had two diffrent ways of doing it. i had afr 165's with a rpm2 intake and there was about 18hp peak to peak diffrent with also a 23ftq diffrence peak to peak but one cam had a way diffrent power band in which why i think it performed better at track than on the dyno. my vote is ci

I just recieved my cam from Jay and will be getting the RHS 215's from him hopefully soon, so I cant say he met all my needs but I feel confident in what hes doing, plus he took the time and called me and he talked alot of basics about cams to some intense stuff on HR and solid cams, this phone call was near 40 minutes A+

I did deciding over a good amount of time, emailed back and forth with many. I ended up ordering my afr heads and cust cam from FTI. Just knowing they were well matched from the same place helped me decide. Im not sure of my numbers/times yet, but when my pal rode in the car(his runs 12 flat) he said he wont race me on the street less his bottle is full and he has on slicks.

After ordering my parts, FTI still helped me out with other questions I had. Im a happy customer.

I don't know why I hear that FTI doesn't respond to some emails. Ed always replies back to me either the same day or next day. I guess I'm lucky lol.

I don't think you could make a bad choice either way. I have dealt with Jay recently and can't complain one bit. Very stand up guy.

Let me throw in a vote for C.I., Jay goes above & beyond the call of duty for his customers. Just remember you get what you pay for.....:D

I saw this written above:
"FTI is more familiar with dealing with AFR's.
CI is more familiar with dealing with Canfields and some other select heads, but not AFR's."

experience with a combination does not make you an expert in cams, it makes you knowledgeable with "that" combination. All 4 stroke motors require the same things. By saying that Ed is geared towards AFR and Jay towards Canfield is short changing these guys badly. Both of these guys can take anything you throw at them because they understand valve events and the relationships to the engine parameters.

A motor does not know what brand it is or what heads are on it (or who ported them), etc. A displaced cylinder volume only sees inlet and outlet parameters as flow restrictions. the valve events, inlet and outlet crosssections and flow parameters are what determine how the motor moves and traps inlet and outlet charge. this does not change, whether its briggs 4-stroke or a pro-stock chevy.

Mr. Rawls,

I know for a fact those guys and you could turn out some awesome cams with 'any' head, but I was stating that Ed supports AFR and Jay supports Canfields.

Since it is a 'flip a coin' situation, my 'advice' was to just go with Mr. Curtis. It would be enough for me to sweep towards his end of the stick...

out of the two I'd choose Ed...he's a great guy. Not saying that Jay isn't, just haven't delt with him personally.

There are other options out there. Buddy for one. Neil Erickson spec's cams as well.

Make some phone calls, shop around, go with the person you're most comfortable with. Don't let others make the decision for you.

I've seen FTI combo's make that as well...hell my OTS XE cam and Eddy small valve heads were only 10hp shy and made more torque than that with a fairly conservative SCT tune..with respect to both you can't go wrong with either, to me it comes down to customer service and delivery...
