I've been digging for 2 days now and I can't find a good, clear article on how to replace the windshield on a Fox Body Mustang. Others.... yes... Fox... no. I don't mean... "just pull a piece of welding wire around the glass and pop it out". (I got that part) I mean... start to finish... trim removal etc. The whole 9 yards. I have two broken Mustang windshields and one broken Silverado windshield with no insurance on any of them. Does anybody have a good link for this?

For the trim there is a tool to remove it (it just pops out). Then remove all of the trim clips. Next, there is a tool to cut the sealant behind the glass. I'm not sure what it called but it has a blade which has a wire that connects to a handle so you can pull it. Remove the glass then remove all of the old sealer with a blade. Re install all of the trim clips and the spacers that go at the bottom (to keep the glass from sliding down) Lay a bead of silicone (black) 1/2" diameter all of the way around the windshield frame on the car. Carefully and slowly put the new glass on the car. Start be resting the bottom of the windshied on the spacers, then tilt the top in slowly making sure it is lined up left to right. Apply pressure around the windshied to make sure it contacts the silicone evenly all of the way around. I'd probably wait till the next day to reinstall the trim (it just clips on)

Btw, I am not a glass guy. I just had a guy come out and replace mine and I watched him do it. It is not that complicated, but it is a pita to cut out the old windshield

Hope this helps! Hopefully someone will chime in and let you know the name of the tool you need to cut the old bead. Also maybe they can add some tips to make it easier for you

Use the 3m window ribbon seal it works good... Advance auto sells it, its by the silicone. Welding wire works better than the tool IMO. Its pretty straight forward, after u remove the old one clean the old ribbon seal off the window frame and rub it down with thinner. Lay your ribbon seal out on the window frame and smush it together where the 2 ends meet. Finally lay your windshield in place and put your trim back on. You dont have to wait put the trim right back on. Its so easy a caveman could do it lol.

You need to use windshield urethane, its not silicone and there is a big difference. Just to add to the above when you clean off the old urethane you need to be sure and use a good pinch weld primer, it is black and applies with a brush. Also depending on the urethane you use you may need a primer for the frit (blacked out area around the perimeter of the windshield).

No, the 3M Ribbon Seal 08611 is butyl. It is not urethane. Like others have said, you want to use urethane, not silicone. You need to use pinchweld primer if there are any scratches from the removal. You never want to use pinchweld primer over pre-existing urethane. I prefer to use a cold knife for the removal whenever possible. If you are using wire to remove it don't let it smoke. Use distilled water only as a lubricant. The smoke is very toxic/carcinogenic.

If your car is an original butyl install I prefer to remove all the butyl down to the pinchweld. Try not to damage the paint at all. Scuff the pinchweld- I use red scotch brite. Apply pinchweld primer over the scuffed area where you apply your bead of urethane.

The best approach is to figure out which product you are using and follow the tech sheet. I prefer Sika or Essex.
