My car has always been cursed with loud exhaust. It's just a mild 306, maybe 260 RWHP, with 1-5/8 equal-length shorties, magnaflow spun-metallic cats in a custom 2.5-inch H-pipe, and a 2.5-inch cat-back with full LX tailpipes. Everybody says Super Turbo's are almost too quiet. Mine were louder than hell, so I replaced them with new ones. They were quiet, for about 2 weeks, then got louder than hell again. So I replaced them with some Borla ProXS, because they're supposed to be quiet. They were...for a little while, then got louder than hell. And here's what they looked like when I took them off, after less than 4000 miles (350 of them on road courses):

So I just put some Walker Quiet Flow mufflers on it, #21548 for $55 each at Summit. They're basically small Super Turbo's without the "flow directors" at each end.

And yeah, yeah, they neck down to 2.25 inches inside, but I don't feel a power loss, and they have a mild, almost stock rumble at idle, a nice rip at WOT, and are whisper-quiet at cruise with hardly any drone.

Before I took the Borla's off I downloaded the "SPLnFFT" Sound Meter App for my iPhone. It's developed by a signal processing expert who seems to know what he's doing. I did not officially calibrate it, so the readings may not be completely accurate, but the difference in readings is likely very accurate. I set it to the "C" weighting which doesn't filter low frequencies as much as other weightings do.

Here's the results. All measurements taken inside the car, windows up, radio and fan off, with the iPhone positioned the same and isolated from hard vibration-conducting interior materials. Bear in mind, a 10-decibel increase is perceived as approximately twice as loud.

RPM.........Borla.....Quiet Flow
Idle..........79 dB......69 dB
Drone.......85 dB......78 dB
WOT 3rd....89 dB......84 dB

That's some whopping differences at idle and in the drone zone, and a noticeable difference at WOT. Now the question is...will it last? Stay tuned, I have a track event the weekend after next. I'll measure again and see if they got any louder. I'll also likely have the car dyno tuned soon, we'll see if they cost me anything noticeable.

Frasier,

The primary reason that mufflers get louder over time is that the packing material in them breaks down due to vibration and heat. WOT open track use is going to do this faster than anything on the planet, other than maybe dyno pulls.

You might try to lower the mufflers in the car some to get some airflow between them and the floorpan of the car. This might reduce the internal temperatures inside them some. Have you checked the temperature of the floorpan after a 20 minute session?

It's carpeted and still has a rear seat so it's hard to get a read on that, but the forward area of the trunk over the tailpipe uprights is practically too hot to touch

Have you thought about going to a different design of muffler?

Your efforts remind me of the definition of insanity.

I've run two different turbo-style mufflers and two different straight-throughs.

Wouldn't you benefit from mufflers that don't have any material in them ? Based on that heat-discoloration, you can assume that is where the exahust is crossing over from the inlet to outlet, and its blowing out any material or just straight up melting it.

I would think some flowmasters would be the way to go.

You might want to wait until after it is tuned before you run it hard, otherwise the packing on those will burn out as well....

Logic and reason suggest that, yes...but I have an event at a track next weekend that's an extremely rare opportunity to run a wonderful, 2.75 mile track close to town that busy-bodies had closed down due to noise. Even though it's right next to the very active Luke AFB. But Luke's having an airshow that day, providing noise cover for us. I'm-a going. Can't miss it.

that was Arizona Motorsports Park, right? I did autocross there many years ago. Very nice place... i still can't comprehend the issue with car noise being too loud vs F16 noise

That's the place. I just helped with a new-driver accident avoidance clinic out there a couple weeks ago, and the lot you probably autocrossed on is a 15 acre asphalt pad with no protrusions or obstructions.

Hello MFE,

How is the tune on your car? Running extremely lean can cause premature muffler death. Call our tech department and discuss the muffler options for your application. It's possible you may benefit from a pair of stainless steel Hushpower mufflers.
