I recently help a friend built a CHP 347 with afr 185's, e303 cam, holley systemax intake, 30lb injectors, 80mm maf, 3/4 long-tubes and dished pistons.

We took it to an open house to get a baseline dyno pull and was very disappointed with the numbers.

Running 93 octane it made 316.9hp and 359tq.

Does this sound right? I was expecting numbers over 350. Any input is welcome. Custom tune is in the near future with a YSI too. Thanks

Ok so the weak link is the e303. I'm guessing a custom cam would be the best option for this setup.

Regardless, with these parts are the HP numbers where they are supposed to be? what do you guys think? thanks again.

I think you'd do well with a Crane 449601, it sports .542"/.563" lift, 224*/232* duration, and 112LS on a 107 intake centerline. This would make the power you are lacking, I'd bet you'd pick up 30hp and not lose much low end.

This is another door stop like the E cam

your best bet is one of the XFI cams that comp has or a stage 3 trick flow cam works ok if you want someting off the shelf.I am currently using the stage 3 temporarily till winter

A custom cam is the real way to go if you are happy with the rest of your parts and aren't gonna change anything

What is the compression?
Did you install cam dot to dot?
Has pushrod length been checked?
You seem to have most of the right parts, aside from the cam. Is this is intended to have a blower on it?
Was this through a T5 or AOD?

I agree with the cam being the problem. It seems like people buying cams tend to be way conservative when they have the parts to support a big cam, and way overcam stock stuff.

Remember, your playing with 50 more cubes than what most of these cams are designed for. So, a custom cam is your best bet, or if you want to pick one out yourself, check out Comp's XFI Stroker series. They are actualy made for 347" motors.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

The dyno was done on a dynojet and the car is a 5spd T5. The compression is low, I believe 8 or 9:1 I would have to double check. The engine was put together with boost in mind. The only reason why we chose to use the e303 was because emission laws here in Northern VA are extremely strict. Car has cats and everything.

But back to my question, are the HP numbers about right for this setup? We still feel this is low...

Thanks again.

go with a comp stroker grind and take that damn e cam out! thats for 302 imo and not a stroker.if you use a stroker grind you'll pick up several HP over the e grind, and please get it tuned also and you'll be ready to fly!! i have seen similar 347's make that much power before.but if it is that low on power something is surely wrong. not trying to make you mad here but my 306 made 342 hp/312 tq to the tires with 185 afr's and a carb.this was with a f cam. and it was 10.5/1 comp with 93 octane.

Just like others have said that cam is out of place in this build. It's an old design that most people are still running in they're cookie cutter set-ups. I would like too see what this 347ci along with that ysi could do with a AFM B-451...

Specs...

Int/Ext: 232/240
Int/Ext: .576/.576
LSA: 112

Your dyno numbers appear to be right on. Your set-up is the same as what I have in a Mustang I bought several months ago except I have Trick Flow induction and our dyno numbers are very similar. The cam sounds good but just doesn't make good power.

I've since purchased a custom cam plus valvetrain kit from Jay Allen at Camshaft Innovations, who I've used previously with great results, to replace my weak cam...this will be a winter project for me. The cam will cost you a little bit more money but in the end you get a cam designed for your combination/goals...money well spent IMO.

I made similar #'s with my last 347- 9.4 compression and a comp cam ..512/232 cam (332whp and 362wtq)

obviously the cam is holding your friend back, custom would be the way to go- but i have an Xstream energy 282-HR cam for sale in the classified section if your interested. (its what i was going to run in my 347 w/ AFR 185/58 heads)
http://forums.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1053641

it has .565 intake lift, .574 exhaust and 232/240 duration on a 112LS and a 108 intake center line...

in a similar setup and 10.5 compression (i think) it made 450hp
