Door panel leather peeling off

WTF kind of cheap #### is this?

I've tried 2 different brands of headliner adhesive (Permatex and Loctite) to get this to stay in place. The Permatex sucked horribly and Loctite appeared to be holding up well but it's come apart again.

The foam that the leather (or whatever it is) disintegrates just touching it.

What's the best way to permanently fix this?

Hey man,

I'm right there with you. This started happening in my 06Gt, and I must say that I'm a little disappointed. It's almost embarrasing opening my doors and having people see the panel flapping over. I tried scraping off both surfaces the best that I could and then spraying the 3M adhesive on both the panel itself and the leather...which worked for a while. But now it is starting to flap over again. At first I thought maybe my lack of window tint was making it too hot in my interior, but this kind of crap shouldn't really be happening.

Anyway, I'll be staying tuned to this post to see if anyone else chimes in with some good tips. Good luck!

I'm thinking I'll scrape off the foam then scratch up the plastic with sand paper or something to give the adhesive something to stick to. I hope it works because this looks really ####ty on a 2006 Ford.

So the foam is actually a separate sheet with very strong adhesive attaching it to the plastic of the panel. I peeled that sheet off and used the adhesive to reattach the leather.

If this junk starts peeling again, I'm just going to hit up some salvage yards and try finding panels that are in better condition.

Been trying to find a thread on another site thats a step by step how-to on this.

The guy scraped off the foam and brushed on Weld contact cement, said it was still holding up after 3 years. Most of the other fixes I've read about using spray adhesives have failed after a few months.

Probably will have to do this myself soon as mine are starting to bubble. Part of living in the south and part of Fords wonderful quaility control.

I think it is ridiculous that Ford has not owned up to this problem.. it is not a matter of if it is a matter of when... the other major issue is the instrument cluster using bad stepper motors... I hate that Ford acts like I am the only person with these problems. If you google these two issues you will see many people complaining. Ford should offer discounts on new door panels and instrument clusters.....

I had this problem and had a local upholstery shop redo both door panels. He put in new black fabric and made it look real good. I was charged $50 a door. The $100 I spent beat the hell out of trying every upholstery adhesive I could find. My door inserts still look great and they haven't come done in the least bit.

My dealer had this repaired under warranty on my 07 GT convertible. The passenger side was peeling badly. They used a local company who removed the panel, stripped off the foam, used some type of fiberglass reinforcement and applied the cover. So far so good. He says its from high temps/heat/humidity and it has happened on many Mustangs here in FL.

My 2005 GT still has under 16k miles. Last summer, within a two month time frame, my instrument cluster failed (speedometer) and the leatherette door panels began to bubble up and peel - car had been trouble free otherwise.

I removed the cluster myself and mailed it off for an 'overhaul' (lifetime warranty). A local automotive upholstery shop redid both of my door panels (installed identical new material) for $220.

Both issues were common problems on the early S197s.
