Some colors were single stage and some were base coat / clear coat. I'm not sure if clear was an option on all colors or if it was a specific color by color type deal, I'm positive someone here will know though.

 

Polish a spot and see if color comes off. Metallics & two-tones had clear.

 

what's your paint code? that's an easy way to tell if it had clear or not. it varied throughout the years. for example for ford black:
1C had no clear.
1990 was YC
1991- present is UA

 

Clearcoat (C/C) paints were first optonal on the Mustang at the beginning of the 1990. That model year and through the '93 model year, most but not all available colors were C/C, and most of the C/C paints were "metallic"...
