Cobra VS TrickFlow Vs Edelbrock Intakes

I just found out that my instake gaskets on my 89 LX 5.0 are shot causing a major vacum leak. The cost of replacing the gaskets is about the same cost as an install of new intakes so it's time for some upgrades.

I'm trying to decide between the Cobra Intake, the TF Street or TF Track, and the Edelbrock Performer RPM or any other reccomendations in the same price range. The car is basically stock except for an underdrive pully, exhaust and 3.73 gears, and a FMS King Cobra Cluth. I'm looking to eventually beef the engine up to 350-400 horsepower and keep it as a daily driver. So please i need everyone's expert opinions in deciding on a new intake. Also my MAF is possibly causing some problems so any reccomendations on a replacement for that would be helpful. Thanks!

Performer 5.0 or cobra/gt40 are the best intakes for a stock headed car. They retain a long runner for excelent low rpm power, but have an increased cross section to flow more than enough air to the stock heads. The final decision really depends on what you want in the end....the performer has been seen to support 340+rwhp unported, with minor cleanup. (acames's car)
It depends on where you want your power. But on a stock motor which is designed for low-end, it does no good to put an intake on for a higher range.

EDIT: Well, I just noticed you said 350-400hp is your goal, and assuming you meant RW, you either need a power adder or a stroker, or a high rpm NA motor. If you go stroker, RPM. If you go supercharger, it has been proven that the perf 5.0 beats most of the mentioned intakes in average HP generation. Suprising eh.

Think about this

The Cobra would work the best with your current near stock combo of the above listed options, with the TFS Street and the regular Performer both being real close. But if and when you plan to get near the 350 hp level, the RPM and Track Heat will be much better suited. Though I think your best option hands down would be to have your stock lower ported and use that for now until you're ready to make major changes (ie: different heads/cam/displacement/etc..)

good point diesel boy. A TMOSS ported lower would set you back a mere 125 bucks plus shipping. That will save you from buying to new intakes starting at 400 bucks each....

I have sold tons of the TrickFlow units. My brother-in-law runs the Street Intake and he has had great luck from it. RPM unit is a very nice intake too. I

I would go Trickflow with stock heads

I've been running the Cobra intake on my stock longblock and love it. It's great for stock motors as well as a mild head upgrade one. You can have them ported also and run more power than many think. I have a 95 in my driveway that has a ported set of E7 heads and ported Cobra intake. Running an E cam, it feels good now even with the rockers needing shimmed. I need to get to that. It's got some grunt. I'm currently swapping to an RPM because the local porter does some cool stuff with them and it will go with my big headed blower motor better. I like the look of the Cobra but since I moved here, I see that everyone and their brother is running it and I like to be different.
If you plan to go with 165's, TFS TW's, 6037's or any comparable head and keep it a daily driver, I'd get the Cobra or TFS street or the Performer(not RPM).
Those intakes don't get as much credit as they deserve.
Many people should remember a certain ported/polished Cobra intake that supported well over 400 HP. If not, the beautifully polished motor in a certain red convertible may spark you memory.
Just my opinion.

With that goal in mind, I had to vote for the RPM. It may not help you out much now compared to a Cobra or Edel 5.0, but this is the intake you'll want if you're shooting for 350-400. As for the meter, if your current one is causing problems, don't get a C&L because those use your existing electronics, and your problem will probably follow. I recommend going for a Pro-M 80mm meter. Both the intake and the meter can be purchased for alot less used if you're looking to save a buck. Later,

i recommend going to andersonfordmotorsports and getting a typhoon intake that is identical to the eldelbrock rpm and it only costs 350 or 450polished. those guys know what there doing. id recommend that for most setups since it will pull till 6500. when the gt40 drops off at 6000. and the street intake wont help much after heads and other power adders.

riiiiiiight

I voted cobra. You can port it after you get heads, etc. And it will be the best choice with stock heads for now.

I'm makin 310 at the wheels with a cobra intake and a fairly small cam, so you can definitely hit 350 -400 flywheel HP.

My friend made 318 at the wheels with a little bigger cam.

I don't want to hear this cobra intake sucks crap cause it doesn't.

Cobra for a stock headed motor. The Edelbrock Performer might best it by a couple horsepower but you don't need to buy a bigger EGR spacer, it is built in. Are you using the stock throttle body? How's that match up with the Cobra? Anyone know? I'd get a 65 mm for if it's in the budget.

I kinda doubt the stock motor needs anything bigger than the stock TB, wich flows somewhere around 580cfm? I have my performer on my car with stock TB and EGR spacer.

Does the cobra lower still have the crappy design on the #1 and #5 runners? The edelbrock is nearly straight through on all runners...more balanced power...

The Cobra family lower does not have nearly as bad a "dog-leg" design on #1 & #5 as the stock lower. Those two do flow lower than the rest in stock cast form, but it's not hard to get them right with the other runners.

To my knowledge, the Cobra casting has never been changed.

Shoulda worded myself differently....I meant compared to stock.

You can still make big power with a performer, no real need to swap to the RPM after heads and cam. It really depends where you want your power. Acames, or Aaron C, had an AFR165 combo with a hardly touched Performer 5.0 intake thumping down 340+ RWHP. Not bad eh.....Brian at HiTech ground the custom cam, and installed the 2.02 intake valves in the heads.

The intake had a little casting flash removed, no porting.
