Has anyone done the cobra front upgrade while leaving the stock GT's in the rear? I am kicking around the idea of swaping in the Cobra front brakes onto my 99. Would this mess with the ABS system to much or would it be ok to do?

I have the Cobra front with stock GT rear, for about two years. No problems until today my ABS light came, not sure what caused it. I'll keep you posted. I'm happy with the setup.

99 GT Coupe sw, I have had the Cobra brakes for about 2 years with no issues. I am not sure what year they where and I choose to get the calipers that don't have Cobra stamped in them. They fill out the wheel much nicer but functionally are not much better than the stock ones.IMO You could also get the bullit brakes as they are basically the same. later Ron

I tossed the same question around in the auto-x forum and pretty much got the same answer. During braking, most of the weight of the car is transferred to the front of the car where the bigger brakes are needed most. The stock rears are fine. One recomendation is to get a proportioning valve if you don't have ABS. That way all four tires lock up as opposed to just the fronts. It allows just a little bit more braking power to be transferred to the rears under hard braking. I got my front set-up a year ago from that brakes-r-us place for 429.00 delivered to the door. The calipers don't say Cobra on them, but who cares. My car is a GT not a Cobra. I did visit their web site lately, and they do have better options and far as powder coating and caliper markings.

P.S. the car stops on a dime.

Hope this helps, Flip.

I did the Cobra brake upgrade a couple of months ago. The rear brakes I left stock. I think the rear brakes are ok for my driving needs. The new brakes feel a lot better that the OEM brakes did. Also the upgrade is very easy. I took me about 2-3 hours with basic tools.

I should not hurt your ABS. Just don't allow the fluid leverl in the master cylinder to get low while bleeding. There is a good how to article in the tech section of this site.

They may seem the same until you drop them on a road race course. Then you find out how much better the cobra brakes with powerslot rotors are. Probably not as good as a baer or something twice as expensive but reasonable for a dual use car. I've run them so hard I have gone through a set of pads in a couple track sessions. Yes, they fade a little but I've never had a braking problem with them and I trust them. I also use hawk pads too.
