Wow!!!!!

Well... This past weekend the wifey and I decided to finally clean her IMRC's. The car has 140k miles on it and it's never been done. So out came the case of gumout, and soft brass brushes from the hardware store.

The project took me all day. Started maybe 11am, and finished at 8pm. Although I did the sparkplugs and Ford Racing 9mm wires at the same time.

Man there was a lot of gunk.

Did it make a difference? HELL YEAH!

:joy:

Now it spins all the way thru 1st, shifting into 2nd brings more tirespin ALL THE WAY until 6000rpm, and 3rd is welcomed by a bark.

Midrange torque and smoothness of accelleration are GREATLY effected.

If you're wondering if you should do this yet... DO IT!

:)

Im in the process of it to I already went thru 8 cans of carb cleaner an its still not all off is there anything else that works better?? im also using a brush an my dremel with a wire wheel I have not even started on the lower yet Im really thinking about deleting them also
I used the soft wire brush to clean the crap off, with spritz of gumout as I went. I'd then rinse with more gumout.

The worst part was all the crap in the heads. I could not believe the black mud that has built up over time.

Is it worth it to do it on an 01 with 36,000 miles or wait?
IMRCs were on 96-98 Cobras only. 99 and up dont have them. hth

Would you guys do it thou if you did not have chargers to compensate for the low end torque loss I have a chance to pick up some deletes now while my intake is out but im N/A I do plan on getting a chip in a month or so thou
I would've deleted them regardless. I hate those IMRCs so much it would be the first mod I'd do on an otherwise stock Cobra. You will lose some low end torque, but it's nothing that a set of 4.30 or 4.56 rear gears won't fix. Some of the guys on here are very adamant about having the IMRCs for increased performance, but for me, the peace of mind is more than worth it. When my IMRCs were on I'm convinced they were only partially opening at times but no check engine light and no way to prove one way or the other -- well...now they're gone so I don't even have to think about it anymore.

If you're a regular track visiter and plan on staying N/A forever and never getting 4.30 or 4.56 gears and want the absolute fastest ET you can possibly get, then stay w/ the IMRCs as they WILL help your track performance. Other guys complain about idling issues and part throttle acceleration -- I have no issues whatsoever. The car drives exactly like it did when it was stock.

Hopefully some others will chime in to give you some different vantage points.

wow lining the upper intake ontop of the secondaries, which have to be lined up with the block, are really f'ing annoying.

im about to rip my fuel rails out. that, and my hood, are really, really getting in my way. im sitting ontop of my motor trying to do this (im 5'5 140lbs)

not to mention my IMRCs were spotless

Make sure you cleaned the secondary ports in the heads.

I didn't have much of a problem lining up the IMRC's, gaskets, and intake.

mine really werent dirty at all, the previous owner said he did them already but i just took my supercharger off and have the intake hat already off so i figured id check..wasnt really any dirty

theres oil sitting inside of the upper intake though i may clean that i just need to get this POS back on, i hate not having an extra set of hands to hold things back or move stuff out of the way. sucks working alone

You don't think changing the plugs and wires out had mostly to do with that? My intake has never been off the car, IMRCs still working, and the car still pulls hard like always...
The secondary ports in the heads looked miserable.

There's no doubt all the built up crap limited performance.

If you do a search on here on IMRC's, you'll find almost everybody experiences the difference I do. Even if they dont' replace their plugs and wires.

Hey guys.......I did a search but no luck. Could someone please define IMRC?
Thanks
I can't remember what the IM stands for but the RC stands for runner control. In the 96-98 Cobras the heads have 2 intake ports, a square primary and a round secondary, as the 99+ heads have 1 intake port. These are known as B heads and C heads or tumbleport heads respectively. To help low end torque, the 96-98 cars had butterflies in the intake manifold that blocked off the secondary port until 3250 rpms when they would open. Because no fuel is injected into the secondary ports the IMRC butterflies, the secondary ports, and the secondary port intake valves get caked with oil and/or carbon buildup.
