Is it possible to buy a used Mustang 5.0 and a handful of bolt on parts and get into the 11's for under $3,000 total? We want to find out...

My 20 year old son has spent the last couple of years helping me on my two cars. He's put in hundreds of hours without a single complaint and we have learned a lot together. I wanted to show my appreciation for all he has done so I have been looking for a deal on a 5.0 to buy for "us" to build together. (besides, if I bring another car home for me the wife is leaving). The car is going to stay out his house and we will doing all of the work together. He will be the designated driver.

I just picked up this 87 Gt 5spd with a fresh 306, Edelbrock Performer heads and intake, 70 mm thottle body, 24 lb inj/PMAS maf, electric fan, underdrive pulleys and cold air intake. It has a mild crane cam that was recommended by Edelbrock to compliment the heads and intake but the seller didnt know the specs.

The paint job is a $299 special but the car is straight w only a few door dings.

Purchase price $1,750.

I picked up a complete Wilson Pro Flow Nitrous kit from a fellow Corral member for $50 and got a new NOS bottle off Craigslist for $65. We still need the fuel rail supply line and fitting. Anyone know where to get it?

Got a set of BBK upper and lower control arms from a Corral member for $125

We are going to take it to the track next friday nite and see what it runs as is and then add the nitrous kit and start with a 75 shot and work our way up to 125 in attempt to get this thing into the 11's for a total budget of 3k. My goal is to buy the remainder of the parts from Corral members.

We've got $1,010 left in the kitty to reach our goal.

Looking for suggestions on how to take the above mentioned car, our $115 nitrous kit and $1,010 worth of bolt on parts and get into the high 11's.

thats the wilsons wet kit from novi with the 75 jets right?

those solenoids should flow enough for 100 maybe 125 hit, id up the jetting, and buy a set of big/littles with et streets and a nice gear 4.10 or so and that should get you into the 11s the tq from the nitrous hit should really help it outa the hole

as for the fuel line, most efi wet kits just connect to the schrader (spelling?) valve, your local speed shop should be able to make you up a little 2 foot braided hose with the correct ends on it, and the fitting is 1/8 npt on most solenoids so youd need a -3 to 1/8 npt adaptor, then whatever other fitting to connect to your fuel rail.

tell him to be easy on the power shifting with that t5 tho, they dont like meanies behind the wheel :blam:

Yes, it's the Wilson kit. I need to find an instruction manual/install instructions for it. It looks pretty simple but I dont want to screw it up. Thanks for the info on the fuel line.

Weight is NOT your friend. Tear everything out that isn't helping you. Get the weight down to ~2700 lbs total and with approx. 300hp you could probably do it. I've seen it doen a few times before, but that's high 11's not mid 11's. It'll be spectular if you do.

As for big and littles, i'm sure you could pick up some old 10hole rims for next to zero as well as use some cheapie "donut" emergency tires for littles.

I'm sure exhaust would be easy as it would be an unbolt affair.
Let us know
Good luck

The ac condensor, ac lines and windshield washer motor (WTF) have been removed. The AC compressor is still intact and we plan on removing it. I found a set of 4 ten hole wheels on craigslist for $65. We are going to try to buy them, put a couple MT ET drag radials on the back.

The car has mac headers and what appears to be a new flowmaster 2.5 cat back but still has the stock cats. After the emissions test next week we plan on replacing it with an h pipe. I found one on craigslist for $75. Would prefer to get parts from Corral members but some parts are very expensive to ship.

Gears & slicks + aggressive driving should put you in the 11s easily on a 75 shot.(good tuneup, optimum nitrous pressure) 100-150 shot I think you should have no problem running mid to low 11s. Maybe not the 1st time out but def. with some seat time.

i dont know your back ground or sons. but i would be VERY careful putting a 20y/o behind the wheel of a 11 second car. a roll cage would definatly be in order if this were my son. also no sway bar is UGLY on the street. please disconnect at the track.
it wont take any more than deep 13's to make a 20 y/o happy behind the wheel and it will be fully powerful enough and dangerous enough. start now. get him learned up really good at the track driving it now. spend 1K getting some sexy prostars or bogarts and a decent paint job. racing seats. good set of gauges. put a suspension and address the crappy brakes 5.0's were stuck with. saftey first!

fixing the door dings and getting the body straight wouldnt cost alot of money. and another 299 paint job wont hurt. grab a sexy set of D-10's convert to 5 lug and disks.

i remember getting my 87 GT at 18 dead nuts stock and being able to get into more than enough trouble. H pipe flowmasters. shifter.cold air.K&N later i was fast enough to get my first string of tickets and cop shadow. 3.73's and a cobra intake.MAF conversion E cam later i was fast enough to slide it off the road at night racing a vette. by the time i was done with that car being full HCI and a 150 shot on top it would have spelled death on wheels if i got that day one at 18 with that much power.

just a thought . off the soap box. also check the thread " sleeper fox pics" or what ever by dave94lightening on here. follow his build and you will be fine.

He's been driving my 92 hatch with HCI, P1sc, intercooler, 12 lbs of boost, t56for 2 years. We have two other cars we take to the track on friday nites. We are building a strip car that we can drive to the track for Friday nite drags. But I hear you and I am concerned for his safety. A 6 point will be added once we hit 11.5 for 3k...

I got this car running in the 13's on motor and 12's on the bottle. The initial investment (price of the car) was $3500. It was a super clean 100% original coupe. On the last page I put together a build sheet and minus the cost of the coupe it is $ 1881. your initial investment is much lower and your car already has some of the parts on it so you will be closed to the goal. Remember mine has no weight removal yet, no headers/intake/cam/heads/ etc...You should
et 11's easy :)

Here is the post if you are interested.

$785 to get remaining parts listed below. Let me know what you've got:

front skinnies, drag radials for rear wheels, window switch for nitrous, bracket for full throttle nitrous switch, nitrous supply line and schrader valve fitting, fuel pressure guage, tach w shift light, FRP 4:10 or 3:73 ring and pinion gears, ac eliminator.

You can skip the microswitch mounting plate and mount it on the gas pedal. Check my post for the pics.

I'd run slicks because with drag radials you are more likely to hurt rear end parts. Plus it will be easiet to 60ft and ET with the slicks.

Ok this is going to be harder than I thought. Took the car to the track last night and ran a 15.00 and a 15.08 exactly as purchased. Couldn't hook up at all on the walmart tires and the car cut out badly over 3,500 rpms. I suspect a clogged fuel filter.

We are going to get a set of Mickey Thompson ET Streets and go back on the 5th. Anyone know if 275/15 will fit on 18x8 wheels with 4.5 BS?

Last time out we ran a string of 14.20's. 60's are in the 2:00 to 2:20 range. We are still on the street tires. The 275/50 ET streets did not fit with the 15x8 welds. They were $400 and broke the budget. We need to sell them and get some 255/60's. We installed a fuel pressure gauge from Jegs, $35, and a used H pipe this week. The car had the stock converters on it with 145k miles on them. The H pipe really woke it up. We still have a miss/stutter at 3k-4k under full throttle. The fuel pressure is only 40 at idle so we are going to increase it to 42 or so. The next test and tune session is March 5th. I will be in DC but Garrett will take it to the track to see if the H pipe made a difference. We are going to try to change the fuel pump before then.

?

those wheels should fit just fine, what is the backspacing? and where are you having clerance problems.. i have a set of 275/15s on a weld wheel sitting on my car in the garage right now

I remember a magazine build from many years ago that did something similar.
It was a lx notch though.

Something like 150 shot,4.10,4 cyl springs, slicks, this stuff is $ but can be found used for cheap.
Free stuff was airbox removed, timing bumped, spare tire stuff gone,Back seat too maybe.
I will see if I still have it.

Update.
We installed a used H pipe, MSD Dist cap/rotor and ford racing spark plug wires. We ran a new best of 13.649! Garrett launched at 3,000, the car dead hooked and spun a little on the 1-2 shift. We tried launching between 3-4k but the car would just spin. We are planning on putting on a set of used BFG drag radials and some skinnies and going back to the track next friday. Then we are going to install a used rear we bought w 373's and the eibach drag launch springs and see if we can get into the high 12's.

Here's the details of the run:

RT .611
60' 2.115
ET 13.649
MPH 105.21

Update. I bought new wheels for one of my cars and sold my old 15x10 Greg Welds with 275/50/15 BFG drag radials to the kid for $100. When we previously mounted the wheels to my car and later tried to remove them the lugnuts would not come off. Apparently there was a manufacturing defect with the wheels. Had to end up cutting two lug nuts off and consequently scratched up the wheels. I am old and don't have anything else to blow my money on so I bought two new wheels and a set of MT ET streets. Sold the old wheels/tires to the kid cheap. He can fix the scratches because he is young and broke and has more time than money.

We took the car to the track with the only change being the new wheels/tires. Only got one run because it was the night before a big race and all of the guys racing were there for test and tune. He launched at 3,000 and the car dead hooked and bogged. Ran 13.7 at 103. At least we don't have excessive tire spin anymore. I think we can safely launch at 4,500 and get down to 13 after he gets a little more time behind the wheel.

Now to swap in the 8.8 with 3:73 gears that we picked up for $200. We will install the eibach drag springs and new control arms at the same time. Hope to drop into the low 12's with these mods. Then we will install the nitrous and try to reach our goal of 11.5.

Can we get to 11.5 with the above mentioned mods and a 75hp shot?
