Breaking a stock axle.... what happens?

Excuse my ignorance on this on... But I was really curious about how ugly it could get if one breaks a stock c-clip axle? I ahve heard that when an axle breaks, it will only break on the line. Is this true 100% of the time (I find it hard to believe it is...)

My point is this.... I know that I have enough power to break the stock axles. Well past that point. BUT... I can only go to the track a couple times each year (not legal) so my car is almost soley a street machine. What are the chances of me breaking one on the street? (I will be running 325/50/15 DR's, but obviously won't be peforming any 5000RPM launches  )

So would I be OK with the stock axles? What if I am not? How ugly could it get?

thanks

Very good chance, especially with those wide ass tires.

I've seen them break on the line, but a guy drive the car half way down the track, with the axle and wheel assemble walking out of the axle tube. Causes alot of body damage, trust me.

Generally when an Axle breaks it will break just about where the splines are at the traction lock or posi unit. Depending on where it happens the wheel can walk out and cause body damage.

I have experienced it myself and got lucky that the wheel never came out.

My Differential now consists of the best of everything from Strange.

Bishop,
When I broke my stock axle, it was on the line, and it was kindof a loud bang, and I knew something wasn't right. It broke by the splines like Nitrostang said, and it messed up the t-lok too. Other than that, the wheel didn't pop out or anything...it started too as we pushed my car back to the pits though. If I was you and wanted alittle more piece of mind without breaking the bank, I would just get some of the moser forged 28-spline c-clip axles. Quite a bit stronger and not to much cash.

How would sum1 know ahead of time if the axles are going bad??... or about2 break/snap??/// any kind sounds? nosie??vibe??feels??/..........thanks
The only way I could tell I was going to break an axle was common sense ;)
5500+ rpm launch, slicks and a well prepped track, I knew it was going to happen that night, I just wasn't sure which pass it was going to be (turned out to be the 4th pass)

No warning AT ALL !!! Just a very loud bang and a car that wouldn't move

Because if the axle which is only held in with a C-clip breaks on the wheel side of the axle there is nothing holding the assembly together.
are you saing that the axle housing breaks off along with the axle shaft? I thought axles are engineered to shear if they become over-torqued and you can only break the axle housing by severe weight overloading. If the tube the axle goes down into (which serves as the spindle for the wheel hub) does not break, how can the wheel get away???:confused: someone explain this to me slowly, I'm really messed up here.

The axle slides into a tube. In the center of the differential there is a Traction Loc. The Axle slides through a gear and then is held in place with a C-Clip. If the axle breaks there is nothing preventing the wheel and axle from sliding out of the tube under acceleration.

hmm, I assumed it was constructed in the same manner as the heavy trucks I'm used to working on where the axle is completely independent of the hub assembly except where it bolts onto the wheel to turn it. The rest of the wheel is held on by a large nut on threads on the axle tube/spindle.

You're saying that the wheel is bolted to the axle which is fastened inside the differential? That's a really stupid way to build a rearend.

An axle in my car broke at the line. It was the 5th pass (ever)on slicks......track was hooking good with the ET Drags and 5k launches didnt hurt either.

I wished I had slipped some Moser 28 spline axles in there before it broke. I ended up paying for a tow but had to wait almost 3 hours for it to get there. When I tore it down, the carrier was damn near impossible to remove. It took 3 guys to get it out and then took a mini sledge to get the splined portion out of the carrier. It then took many hours cleaning metal chips and shavings out of the axle tubes and the housing. All the bearings had to be replaced as well as the seals too.
I ended up spending twice as much as I would have if I had just bought the axles. Car was down for over a week too waiting on parts to come in.

New axles can be had for less than $250 and can be installed in an afternoon. Well worth it in my eyes.
