Best way to put a convertible top down, manually

Hey, I was just wondering, is there a proper way to put down the convertible top without power? My top motor just gave out and I want the top down. In fact, with the beautiful weather coming up, I will probably just leave the top down until June when the rainy season starts again!:D Meanwhile, I will get the top motor rebuilt.

I've done it a couple ways of which niether may be best.... First, I manually forced the top up & down. It's tough fighting the hydraulic pressure; but there is no dissassembly required & therefore no parts\clips\whaterever to find at a later date. Second, I removed the upper ram to linkage pins. This makes it where you can easily drop the top; but it is hard to lift up by yourself. You also loose some of the structural strength; the frame structure will feel "sloppy". But, it shouldn't be an issue for a short term solution IMHO....

Does the motor make any noise when you try to let the top down? If the motor makes no noise, check to make sure you have power going to it. You can pull the connector loose at the motor and test it easiest there. Can you see the area around the motor to see if it's leaked out fluid? If indeed the motor is the problem, you should be able to loosen and then disconnect the lines from the motor. You'll need plenty of rags to keep from making a mess. Want to buy a good top motor?

All that happens when I push the top switch is a click, up or down, from the trunk where the motor is located. I was told that the top motor is bad.

Thanks. But I just picked one up locally from Craig's list. Hopefully that will fix it.

Just in case someone finds this thread in the future, there is an easy to pull pin that disconnects the top frame from the pistons, one per piston. Follow the piston shaft up to where it connects to the top frame push point, and there's a clip you can pull that disconnects it. You can reach it from inside the car. Then there's no pressure at all holding the top down, but it's still a b!@#h to open and close since the frame relies (mechanically) on even distribution of "push" or "pull" (i.e. you almost cannot lift it from the side - get in the car, stand in the center lift it out, push it forward).

Good luck.
