I did a search and found a little information. I have a '90 model GT with a 460 and a c6 in it. it has stock 460 iron heads that have ported and polished to CJ specs but retain the small valves. it has a stock crank and rods with 60 over trw flat tops. have no clue what cam is in it but it is a small hyd. flat tappet cam. it has i belive crane roller rockers, weiand stealth dual plane intake, holley 750 dbl. pumper with mech. secondaries, 5000 stall converter, transbrake, ATI superdampr (i think thats right), and i belive 4.56 rear gears. for ignition controll it has an old mallory dist., and an msd 6al. now for my question. at idle which is around 800rpm, the timing is 36 degrees. then at full advance it is around 48 degrees. the full advance comes in pretty low. not real sure exactly what rpm. car runs great. but I just want to know if that much timing is normal? also I have a nitrous kit on it and know that the rule of thumb is 2 degrees for every 50hp. but i was told to add another degree just to be safe. and where do I need to take the timing out at? full advance? or idle?
Thanks Luke

Your timming mark and indicator are either WAY wrong.. or you have a VERY VERY VERY low compression engine. With 48 degrees advance on iron heads and that cam.. it should have knocked the pistons out the pan already.

Ideal timming on the iron head stuff... on gas. Looking at about 34 to 38 total. On that high a stall converter, you could run that locked out, or with the 12 degree mechanical your getting 22 inital wont be too bad.

I would get something with an auto retard attached, where you can pull the timming only when the N2O is on... Doing it manually is going to make it hard to start, ad could cause problems with the thing loading up before ya try and spray it.

You can get a MSD timming controller to piggy back with the 6Al.

And then when the N2O solenoids open the timming drops back to where it should be.

Doesnt matter, as you exceed the burn rate of the fuel, the added timming costs you HP.. You have to compress the burning fuel...

So your running about 105 octain.. No big deal, might stave off detonation with that kind of timming, but it dont make any more power.

Way too much timing. it should be around 14 initial and around 36 total. may want to do a TDC test and see if the balancer hasn't slipped. Is it a stock balancer? Either you got a real low compression deal or the balancer is bad. Fix it before you spray it though.

BTW, If you're looking for a good 460 site check out www.460ford.com

I post over there as well as Kim. It gets alot more traffic than here (not knocking the Corral Kim).

ok i did check the balancer and it was on 0 and no it is a ATI superdampr. yeah not gone spray it yet just got it running.
thanks for the refferal.
how do i check the initial timing. it has an old mallory distributor and i mean old.
Thanks Luke

yes i checked the balancer and pointer. they are correct. i have not tried to back the timing off to 32 degrees full advance. i made small adjustments and it seemed to run better where it is now. when i get home i will try backing it off to around 32 and see how the motor likes it. does anyone know how to get initial timing with this mallory distributor or do i need to call them????
Thanks

Not sure if that dist needs any special setup or not. maybe check the Mallory site to see. I'd say back her down to 32 total, reset the carb and see what it does. Most BBFs don't need, or like, anything past 36 total.

alright i'll try that and see how it likes it. it was lean so i stepped up to 84 secondaries. haven't messed with the primaries yet. but i'll take some timing out and see what happens.
Thanks Luke
