Are these damaged AFR heads worth it?

These are are on market place about a mile from my house. They are AFR 165 #1402, sold bare. $700.00 for the pair. Ad says damaged chamber, but fixable. I contacted the seller and he said a screw fell into the chamber through the intake and caused this damage to the chamber and one valve seat.

Are they worth it? After you figure the price of a complete valve train and then the repair, plus R&R of the heads, what would be a reasonable guess in total cost? Heads are expensive and this would be for a yet another project car, that I'm working on while I wait for my other project car to get fab work completed.

I think it is that second chamber from the top. Not sure if he tried to clean it up, but you can see a little bit of cratering and then the shiny area on the seat. Probably not the hardest damage to fix with a little welding and a new seat, but what does that cost nowadays? All the old school machine shops that could fix this around here are gone, and if I take it to a big name shop I'm at the mercy of whatever they want to charge. On top of that, valve train components aren't cheap. He has a good complete set of 185s also, but they are $1800 and 72cc, so those won't work for me.

Thanks... needed the blunt response. I passed for sure, but they were so close to me, I had at least ask about them.

The price of new AFRs seem expensive, until you try to buy a cheeseburger. No such thing as a free lunch.

In addition to the damage repair and needing a complete valvetrain, there is also ALOT of oxidation and pitting on the surfaces. which means milling. And these are only 165's.

IDK what a set of bare new castings costs these days (how most builders / porters purchase them), but I would imagine around the asking price or slightly more than these. I would think the owner purchased a set of new bare heads and moved all of his valvetrain over. I'd pass on these.

If you can weld, and have access to a machine shop without paying labor, even then price is high, those are old castings and had about 5 revisions since. Old eye brow heads where pre 8mm stuff for sbf castings so even his valve train is useless on a new casting. See people trying to sell those as if there same as the current afr heads all time, most of the asking more then they paid for them new..

Bought a set of Renegade 185s with the 72cc (?) chambers for $200. I don't regret it....but I have a tig and some time. I did have to buy springs and valves though. Had they been more, I would've passed. I understand guys wanna get as much as they can for parts but used heads, even at 50% of their cost new, are going to need at least seals and I've got no idea how long those springs were on it nor the abuse they've had.
